Andy's singing

Andy's singing

Postby Grant on 09 Apr 2007 16:58

A few notes: on many videos it seems like andy forgets he has to sing. He also has his jaw stuck out in what looks like a very uncomfortable posture. Can any singers out there comment? Is he trying to maintain a tonality?
I know it's hard to play guitar and sing at the same time (especially when you are fiddling about with your pedals.)

This is anot a "singer's" opinion, LOL, just a drummer until someone who actually sings posts to your question <giggle>

Honestly, that how I remember the Police with just the three of them...it seems that Stewart missed a good bit of his cues as backup singer (about one in 4 Roxanneohs...grin) and Andy a little less but still so...we all know what Stewart is busy doing, surely...and ya it's devilishly hard but Andy has always seemed to play with his head really cranked down, chin to the chest, at times, probably not making it much easier <grin> But really, I mean, how can we lose? Either its polished perfection from the singing lessons, etc. or it's the way it was, they sing when they damn well can make the cue, LOL...either way, heaven <grin>

Plus, I have DIY t-shirts planned, that's how much I'm looking to either option: I <3 SC...ok Grant, that says I Love SC, btw you kidder <grin>...Stewart Girl...Stewart Copeland Kicks Ass...and the Gina Super Cat shirt I already have! I'm ready to rock, with a full concert wardrobe and all <grin>

Well specifically I was referring to the early days- like the old grey whistle test video on the dvd. I could go document some other times when he
seems to forget that he's busy singing and turns his head, or stops mid-chorus. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I think I know what you're talking about Grant.

As the head-turning goes, I think he's just concentrating on the guitar stuff. Since the guitar comes first for him, sometimes it means stopping in mid-sentence to get the guitar right. (Stewart does it as well, of course. On the flip side, Sting doesn't always manage to hit all of his bass notes cuz he's concentrating on the lyric.)

As the weird jaw thing goes, sounds like he's either
a. tensing up
b. straining for notes
c. screwing up lyrics
d. a combination of the above

Andy has never been especially happy about singing (and up until now, I don't know how much training he has had) so I think it's mostly him tensing up, particularly for the uncomfortable notes. (If you can get yourself to relax your muscles, the notes come easier; but it can be hard to fight against that natural inclination to clench up.)

Andy seemed to be the one most in favor of them singing during the press conference, so I don't think he dislikes it. It does seem like he and Stewart both took a pretty random approach to it back in the old days. I'm assuming they'll try to nail it down better this time around since Stew got a vocal coach.

Doing it in the studio is easier than doing it live, but if you want a good example of Andy singing back-up, you can hear him pretty well on "Bring on the Night".

Did he? I remember an interview with him in which he was pretty un-jazzed with his singing voice, but that was also quite a while ago.

Vocal coaching will absolutely help them out. At the minimum, it will help with their comfort/confidence level.

Yeah-- when Stewart asked for the crowd's opinion, Andy was nodding his head for doing it themselves.

I thought he did a pretty good job at The Whiskey. Didja hear him singing the high "EE-YEY-O" on the "Regatta" section of "Can't Stand Losing?"

Well, I don't know. I didn't see the press conference. But, I just watched "The Police Around the World" video over the weekend and Andy seemed to be singing ok. Stewart was the one who said they sucked. I know he has a vocal coach. Did you all hear the radio interview he did (I'm sure it's on the links)? He gave a little sample of a vocal exercise. Oh, to be a fly on the wall. :) I'm not sure if Andy has one as well.
Anyway, it's clear the fans don't want do-wop girls. I'm sure he'll do OK.
Hey, for two hundred and thirty frickin' bucks he better do at least 'OK"!!
Know what I mean?

I feel that Andy is the coldest Police's band member, with his fans...

He is a cold genious guitar man.

You think?? I've heard from a lot of people that Andy is really friendly to his fans, mostly.

My only complaint with him is no forum like this one over at andysummers.com, but then we'd all really be losing sleep from trying to keep up with all the messages...;)
