I love hearing everyone's replies on questions like this, since everyone can be spot on no matter what they pick <grin>

I think Stewart would be the first to admit that jazz has tremendous influence on him...one can only be "immune" to that which one has been exceedingly exposed...his father played trumpet for Glen Miler Orchestra (among others) and his first drum instructor was a local big-band jazz drummer...Stewart's jazz training (and, more importantly, how he switched it up and diverged from it) was definitely innovative in the rock genre, even though its a standard argument that rock itself as a style derived from jazz drumming (bebop identified as the turning point), with the shift from a swing to a straight-eight feel...Stewart always swings while rocking our asses off <grin>

The interview in the 82 Issue of Modern Drummer- Stewart specifically states that he's a rock drummer that swings.

Don't deny it Stewart!

Sure we dig his distinctive-sounding kit, but his syncopation and polyrhythmic style comes first for me. And his use of the traditional grip shouldn't be underestimated.
