The Police hint at new album

Police's guitarist Andy Summers has hinted that the band may get to work on a new album after their forthcoming world tour.

The star, who attended a book signing and Q&A session for his memoirs One Train Later in London yesterday (April 4), said the reformed three-piece would consider making a new album after their world tour.

He added: "If we do well with these concerts we may well make a sixth album. I can't see why not."

The guitarist also revealed that the trio will be debuting some new material at their forthcoming tour, which kicks off in Vancouver on May 28 before heading to Europe in August.

"We've been jamming acoustically lately and we've been really enjoying it," said Summers. "We'll be playing a couple of new songs at the shows in the summer."

Dates for the Police's world tour sold out within an hour of going on sale in the U.K. and were snapped up within minutes in the U.S.

"I was shocked, I had to admit. I thought we'd do alright on ticket sales but I never expected such a high demand," said Summers. "We were booked to play arenas on many of the dates but we ended up having to upgrade to stadiums. It's pretty daunting, I have to admit."

Wow!!! While I'm crossing all my fingers (would cross my toes if I could), I'm going to hope that at least a few songs on any new album are Copeland/Summers compositions...

Well, this clinches it for me. That's great to hear him say!

As mentioned earlier, i won't place any expectations on the new stuff. But if pressed, i'd expect it to sound closer to Synch than Outlandos in texture and mood.

Stewart and Andy have had a long time to express themselves musically. To me, that's what the last twenty-odd years have been about in the context of the group. I suspect when Sting referred to their having amassed greater resources for dealing with their inner tensions that this is what he was talking about.

But in some of the interviews we've seen there's been a suggestion of greater cooperation and collaboration than before. Sting has been stretching himself musically in the last few years, til he finally seems to have exhausted nearly every means of expressing himself. If he can look back 4 centuries for inspiration, 30 years doesn't sound out of the park anymore. The only thing left for him to do was surround himself again with musicians powerful enough to challenge him.

Maybe he will let them. It'd be great if they took their cues from a Primus or an Oysterhead and let Sting pen the lyrics and the group compose the music. I can certainly understand him wanting to be able to get behind the words he has to say. Stewart and Andy should also be able to express and relish their own contributions.

This is by far the most interesting news since the tour was announced. I know a lot of time has passed and they'll want to try new territory, but I'm hoping at least some of whatever they do as new material will involve reggae...

Yeah this is definitely all good news to hear. Sorry I've been out of the loop tremendously lately, I have a 15-25 page research paper I've been slaving over on the Sandinistas. I'm becoming more and more of a socialist lately, if I wasn't already. Haha.

Anyway, this is so good to see for the eyes, I'm happy.

Ugh, back to studying.
