This got Weller mentioned in the mainstream press for the first time in ages and that's probably the basis of the whole thing. Everyone benefits from it in a publicity sense. Stewart made a great comment (can't remember where I heard it) that bands that are doing well tell you about who they like and bands that are struggling talk about all the bands they hate.

I've got to agree with Divemistress here. I'm not convinced this really happened but even if it did, I don't care. I'm a fan of The Police and of Weller (actually I'll take solo Weller over solo Sting - sorry!). What do I care if they like each other? Joe Strummer used to slam The Police, Elvis used to slam Sting all the time - that didn't keep me from liking their music.

I particularly like Weller's first 2 solo albums - the self titled one and Wildwood. They're right up there with the best Jam records in my opinion. I've seen him live a number of times and he has an amazing voice and puts on a great show.

I loved that 'Monkey To Man' song by Elvis, when I first heard it I thought it was some track I'd missed from Armed Forces or something...really reminded me of Elvis circa 1980.

Dive, I think Stewart sounded off on a few bands he likes in an interview that you had posted in the links. I know he said he listens to Slipknot to wake himself up in the morning...which is pretty funny. I'm not much of a fan of Slipknot (who are a really hardcore metal band if you dont know them), but their drummer Joey Jordinson (sp?) is amazing and (perhaps unexpectedly) very intelligent and a real student of drums and rhythym. Stewart had mentioned being very impressed by him in an article I read. I also read an interview with Jordinson and the interviewer told him that SC had said he was impressed by his drumming, and Jordinson said he was unaware of it but that he was psyched to hear it since he was a huge SC fan...

I seem to remember him saying, circa ESTPIO screenings/Q&As, he was listening to alot of PJ Harvey, who I have always loved...I think it might have been around the same time as the death metal/double kick drummers/Slipknot comments...

Before you all bad mouth Mr Weller, just bear in mind it was in the Daily Mirror's 3am Girls column, and may not be 100% factual. I thought it funny in a way, just like his reported remark on being asked to duet with James Blunt and the comments on Sir Bob's Brit award. If true, then perhaps they had beef back in early days of The Jam and The Police.
