Concerts at baseball stadiums -- Help?

Postby mairinpgh on 03 Apr 2007 14:25

Beware of baseball stadiums for concerts - unless you are on the floor or in lower field seats, the accoustics are just horrible. I saw Springsteen at PNC Park, a new/"old-style" field, had 200-level seats facing the stage (i.e. not too far up in the stands) and it was just awful, terrible echo, etc. Easily my worst concert experience (and I have been to my share of big arena style concerts). But then I saw the Rolling Stones in the same venue, with seats on the field- although not very close to the stage - and it was far better soundwise.

O FFS, I've been there for a concert before when I used to live in the Bay Area (the Who when they were playing the whole Tommy opera from start to finish in mid 80s)...however o let's just say I used to party like a rock star and it will take a few looks at the chart and some hoping to see if I can remember something useful

Hard to say, UCLA. Honestly, if I were local to the stadium (and remember this is just me and I'm slightly nuts, but I've done this), I would go over to the venue and sweet-talk someone into letting me check out the space.

But if that's not an option, the best any of us can do is guestimate. At 30 rows back, you're not going to see the cymbals reflect off SC's wirerims [thank you, Samburu, for allowing me to steal that beautiful image], but that doesn't mean you won't see the band and have a great time. The Boys will rock, the crowd will be wild, and the screens will be there to show every wrinkle. Since it sounds like you've got tickets for more than 2 people, there's also the finding-enough-tickets-together issue and the reselling issue (which is its own problem) that you have to take into consideration.

I appreciate the insight, mairinpgh. Unfortunately, the baseball stadium is the only Bay Area show to choose from, so Mount Davis here we come. But thank you for the info -- that's quite helpful.

And GSC, don't worry about the venue details -- sounds like those brain cells are gone already. But I'd love to hear some of those war stories of yours.

LOL the Who show was one where I could have used an "Identity Assistance" booth...o Goody, I just remembered I was at the Coliseum also for Piink FLoyd's Delicate Sound of Thunder tour...good times...both times we were like up in the 300 section front of stage but up in the earth's stratosphere...If the Police were playing in the Oakland Arena (sorry its Oracle Arena now, LOL) I could just about describe your view from each section, I must have seen like over 30 shows there, at the very least...

I used to go to concerts just about every other weekend with Shoreline, Oakland Arena & Coliseum, Warfield & Great American Music Hall not to mention all the clubs (from Berkeley to San Jose) & college venues all being less than an hour in any direction...In trying to recount any war stories I would invariably sound like an elderly person...was it that time...or was it the other...gah can't remember! I mean I must have been to over 80 Dead shows alone, I don't even know how I would start to calculate overall concerts or begin to keep anything straight al all

In more ways than one from the sound of it. 8)

Don't worry, GSC -- we all know that Dead shows aren't meant to be remembered. They're meant to be strung together into one loooong trip.

Truckin' . . .

Heh. Saw the Dead twice myself. Once at RFK Stadium in D.C., which may be the most people I've ever seen at once in my life.

You know, I've probably seen at least a thousand concerts. And I think all you'd call "war stories" are things like this last weekend, when I nearly came to blows with some guy over a setlist...;)

Heh I have egads of set lists around here somewhere..we used to do "Summer Tour" and landed at RFK a few times  When I hit 30 it struck me that I would have to carry around this carcass for the rest of my days...something that's not really a revelation for most, but something that really didn't hit me until 3-0...after that I'm the biggest squaredy-pants...I have like a glass of champagne every so often and that's about it...so, it's kinda like the flip side of partying like a rock star in youth now I do yoga, pilates, go to the gym, drink lots of water and so forth like an old rock star...but at least I am blessed with better skin than Keith Richards <grin>

Yeah. 30 really sucks. The minute I hit that milestone, I started getting killer hangovers and feeling like ass the day after an all-nighter.

So now I drink more expensive beer, and go to bed at 4.

;)

Egads, did I just hear someone's bones crack?

Dive, that must have been one hell of a setlist dispute!
