What's Paul Weller's problem?

Little issue with Sting methinks? Maybe Stewart can shed some light? did he he get turned down as an opening act?
I love the Jam and some of his new stuff isnt bad, but apparently he may be a little twisted...

Paul Weller spits on Sting pic

Paul Weller spat on a photograph of Sting backstage at his charity show with Noel Gallagher in London earlier this week, according to reports.

The former Jam hero is not thought to be a fan of the Police star, having recently referred to him as "a f*cking horrible man."

It has now been claimed in a U.K. tabloid that during an interval at Gallagher's Royal Albert Hall gig for the Teenage Cancer Trust, Weller came across a 2000 picture of Sting.

Apparently, he "marched straight up to it, coughed up as much phlegm as he could muster and planted it plum in the middle of the Police frontman's head...as he walked away, Weller then snarled: 'F*cking twat!'"
Thanks Stewart!

That's a shame.

Saw Paul Weller on the Stanley Road tour, great musician.

Not sure if this was for publicity.

Sounds like he's a changing man.

Elvis Costello apparently made some disparaging remarks at the rock and roll hall of fame induction as well. The Police were a better band, and infinitely more successful, than any of their contemporaries. Sting clearly has been an A-hole in the past, but certainly no moreso than these losers. That leaves envy. Or maybe he wasn't enough of a communist for their tastes.

Unlike Paul Weller, Elvis Costello is an intelligent person. When he makes disparaging remarks about Sting he's just taking the piss out of him. Sting deserved it for his terrible performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But he's not so crude that he'd spit on his picture. Paul Weller is a twat.

Elvis Costello on Sting:

You need to meet Sting. He's a totally charming guy. He's always been a nice guy, very good looking, he's got a good voice--it's not a voice I like particularly, but he's written one or two really beautiful songs, and he's been extraordinarily fortunate in many ways. He's some people's idea of sophisticated. He plays the corporate events; maybe nobody invites him to any better parties. But there's always somebody in music who's equivalent to that role, and I think he's easy to hold up as a kind of an Aunt Sally. I don't think he's an insincere musician. He just doesn't seem to value the same things about music that I do.

Too bad, I thought Paul Weller had a little more class than that. I am still a huge fan of The Jam and he got a rave review when he was last in Vancouver with his solo work. As for that no-talent tool Gallagher...Weller should've hacked one up right in his face. Note to self: Punch Noel Gallagher's lights out. :x

From what I hear Paul Weller's main issue is that he believes his own press... and people have been referring to him as 'a god' for far too long now.

Great musician; bit of a twat ;)

But then Costello has also been quite a bit more successful. So you can see the envy varies in direct proportion. :D

I think Sting does have a problem with ego and self-absorption. He's also more talented than any of the above individuals. The former unfortunately gets in the way of the latter. That's why most people like his work with the Police infinitely more than his solo material. Sting has it in his own power to do great things, but for most of the past 25 years, he's chosen not to. It almost seems to be some sort of self-defeating mindset. Cutting off your nose to spite your face and so on. No doubt tensions within the band played a role, and it seems clear Stewart is not blameless by any means, but these things could and should have been worked out long ago.

Paul Weller

Postby giovanni on 31 Mar 2007 11:32

hmmm...it's not the first time Paul Weller does such a remarks on Sting....in my opinion Paul remains anyway a very good and cool singer for what he did in the past and still doing now...we never know which kind of person there might be behind a good artist...

Anyway, back to Sting, I would be a little worried to say something like that to Sting...not because of Sting the musician, but because of Gordon the guy from Newcastle...for what I know they might be very 'sensitive' about personal offenses...ehehheh...

I can tell that in Milan you I grew up in an area where you got to defend yourself from everything, such as drug dealers, gypsies attacking you to get your money or shoes, little kids spitting on you to start a fight, gangs fights (I got beaten sometimes but I gave them all back in return...ehehe)... and don't let me tell you what happened at school...
you know, those sorts of place where growing up you're not anymore afraid of walking in the street in the night alone....

(I just heard the other day that some of my old friends of those times were found dead, or get imprisoned or can't get their feet back in Milan...otherwise...)

Maybe growing up in Newcastle is not like that (sorry if I did offend somebody from that area), but I've heard similar stories from people living there.

There are many words I can learn here which I never studied at school 8)

'Going underground' is one of my favorite song. I know it's better to
tell artists' personality from their music, but too bad to hear Paul's
unpleasant comments about Sting...

What I would like to say to Paul is....not to knit your brows and
do your music in your way. You don't have to care about Sting.

I agree, Gio.

Gio, are you trying to tell us Sting is a badass? Good deal. Maybe it means he still knows how to write ferocious bass lines.

Weller's last few albums have been great, IMO. Who knows why he feels he's got this bone to pick. And I will go see E. Costello any time, any where. He still rocks with the best of 'em.

Well Sting is from Newcastle which by most accounts can be a pretty rough-and-tumble area to grow up in. I remember in Andy's book (read it by the way if you haven't yet) when he told the story of the skinheads who hopped up on stage when the Police were playing an early gig. Andy said Sting knew what they were all about and he knew if he didnt let them do their thing he'd have to fight all of them. So he let them jump up and down on stage and do their stupid crap and then told them all to get the f*ck off the stage when they were done. You can only have grown up with that element to know how to deal with people like that.
Thanks Stewart!
