Why is this place so darn small now?

Why is this place so darn small now?

Postby ManWithGoodTaste on 05 Jun 2017 06:03

This is a serious question. From about 5 years ago, to now, these forum seem to have lost most of its people.

Did everyone die or something?

There was a whole bunch of drama about 5 years ago that cleared the place out pretty good. Most of us are on Facebook or other places now and check in here occasionally. I confess I'm guilty of forgetting about it sometimes.

Twitter & Farcebook have turned this place into Crickettville.

There was drama 5 years ago? I must have blocked that memory. I think it was the site remodel. The forum was gone for awhile. I think some people didn't realize it came back. Others kicked the habit when they were forced to go cold turkey by the revamp

i believe the main is that several users who would like to be able to participate can't because they have had password issues that continue to remain unresolved. :(

I'll rather hope those issues get resolved.

And it is entirely possible to eventually get a new email, and make a new account.

Hello Conroy & luna, first of all.
I only get on here abt once or twice a month anymore-big move abt 3+ years ago for older family members I needed to be near to (because I am "it", no others close by), and the internet is available to me for personal/non-work use when I take my laptop somewhere, usu. library. At my old job, where I used to live, internet had many options, not too pricey, and it was allowed to use your PC for personal stuff on breaks, lunch, etc.......
But it's true, a lot of the folks slid on over to FB & other media for interacting, Stewart & Andy both post things on a FB feed.
There are still a few who have kept the Nuttermas Card Exchange alive every year, courtesy of ltwoman (awesomest!!), and others have had opportunity to meet up before some of Stewart's chamber/symphony/opera performances. It was great to finally meet folks before the Ben Hur premier. I think the social part of Stewart's site here has just gotten diluted by those other options, especially now that it's a decade since The Tour.
For myself, this is still where I go to check out what's what, even if I am not logged in or posting. Nutters always seem to have the news.

The Facebook option is kind of lame, really. Sure, Stewart posts news there, but it is impossible to talk to the man. Not saying he owes me a conversation, but still.

And, to be honest, I think it is EASY but WRONG to have only 1 social media platform to talk to everyone. I just said it is easy, but it also crippling: you become completely addicted to FB, unable to function online without it.

Which is why I support the idea of many smaller forums.

The problem with this forum (and Ask Uncle Ian) back when they were small pre-Tourzilla is that it was easy for sock puppets and folks who took advantage of Stewart's penchant for interacting with his fans and pretty much ruin it for everyone. For instance one such sock puppet claimed to suffer from brain cancer at the time that it was publicly known that Stewart's brother Ian was fighting the same disease. That individual was just trying (successfully) to get Stewart's attention and sympathy. And there are lots of other examples over the years. And the absence of admins around here lately makes it less likely to deal with that type abusive behavior. I like the idea of just using 1 social media platform because it makes it easy to just look in one location for news and updates. But I do appreciate all the folks like Equalizer who continue to post those updates here because I sometimes find out about them here before i see them on the Feedbag.

This site is still home for me. NO FB! And yes, Conroy, a big shout out to EQ for keeping us informed here.

Hi there , I must confess I'm essentially on FB now to post news and facts about Stewart. My site is essentially used to post new music releases and events. But I'm still faithfull to the SC.Net and still comes from time to time. Hope you're all doing well and still have the pleasure to read you in the future.

Many forums suffered from the Facebook boom. I still like this format and it's a shame that it's not as it once was. I'll keep checking though.

As disgusting as that sounds, FaceBook in no way is immune from the same abuse. And Stewart never replied to me there, so for ME it's worthless.
