OT- Sting playing in L.A. tribute show

Postby TheEqualizer on 07 Jan 2017 18:29

A number of musicians who have backed Bowie through the year along with a number of special guests will be playing a small number of shows in tribute to Bowie around his birthday/anniversary of his death. Included in the musicians is Gizmo guitarist Adrian Belew. The shows are in London, Tokyo, Sydney, NY, and LA. They just announced that at one of the LA show, Sting will be among the special guests.

I was not aware that Sting had any connection with Bowie, but I suppose this may be interesting.

The show is at the Wiltern on January 24. The venue is tiny, so you need to get tix asap

That is a TUESDAY, so a no go for EQ :(

For the jaded, this is not a money grab cashing in on Bowie's death. The shows are for charity.

1-8-17 (Bowie's 70th birthday) - 02 Academy in London
1-10-17 - (Anniversary of Bowie's death) NY - Terminal 5
1-24 and 25 - 17 - LA at Wiltern
1-29 and 30 - 17 - Sydney Opera House
2-2-17 - Tokyo Dome City Hall

Originally, there was supposed to be a show in Berlin, but that fell through. That's such a shame given Bowie's strong connection to Berlin.

FYI
It appears that Joe Sumner is the bass player for all of the shows.

Also, Sting has indicated that he will be singing just one song. No one is saying which song it is yet.

Given Stewart's connection with Adrian Belew now, it would be great to see Stewart pop in, though I never saw him as much of a Bowie guy. Though I thought the same thing about Sting.

I really hope there are dvds released on these shows.

The first one must be happening right now in London and here I am in my pj's and not feeling very well on the Isle of Wight which is actually not that far from London though a bit expensive with boat and train to get there. If any nutters are lucky enough to be going then I hope you all have a great time and please report back.

Hope they do something from Aladdin Sane :-)

Thanks for the info Eq. x

Unfortunately, the word is that these shows are not being recorded. On the positive side, I got tickets for the January 24 show. I'll be sure to report

Per the setlist I saw, Joe Sumner closed the show in London with Under Pressure. Other guests included the dude from Spandau Ballet, who sang Changes, Simon LeBon, who sang Let's Dance, and the lead singer from Def Leppar (I forgot his song). The show was kicked off by Bowie's close friend, Gary Oldman, who sang Dead Man Walking.

Last night, Celebrating Bowie played in NY for the anniversary of Bowie's passing. Joe Sumner sang Life on Mars?
You can see his performance starting at 10:47:

Another Copeland connection, one of the singers of the B52s (Kate Pierson), who opened for the Police during their Last Goodbye, participated in the concert as well. Kate sang Golden Years.

Joe Sumner again closed the show with Under Pressure.

Gavin Rossdale of Bush (the ex of Gwen Stefani) will be performing at both the January 24 and 25 shows in LA. To my knowledge, Sting is still only playing at the January 24 show.

Here are Adrian Belew's comments on the show in New York on January 10:

QUOTE

TREMENDOUS NEW YORK SHOW!!
I haven't checked any reviews yet, but anyone who says otherwise was not at the same show I was at.
it was one of the most moving exciting events I've ever seen or been part of. when the full double string section plus harlem choir plus male and female back up singers plus blasting horn section plus rockin' band plus whatever lead singer plus swooning audience are in full swing together, it is HOT!
I will leave it open for your adjectives (or complaints, rebuttals, etc.) and anxiously await your comments.
sorry about the lack of photos, I was a bit engaged.
lastly, my congratulations to everyone involved, on every level, in doing something I think David would be proud of.

END QUOTE

Joining Sting at the LA show will also be Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction, Joe Elliot of Def Leppard (who also performed at the Brixton show), Bernard Fowler, and the Selah Gospel Choir.
