The bonus discs from the yet-again-remastered Led Zeppelin I and II. And am not too impressed.

The bonus disc for Zep1 is a 1969 concert and it is good, but the band is not at their peak yet and it is a shadow compared to the live music on How the West was Won (one of the best live CDs ever).

The bonus material for Zep2 is mostly different versions of the stuff that is on the released album plus a new instrumental. Led Zeppelin II is one of my favorite albums but hearing the outtakes does not do much for me.

A similar set was released for Led Zeppelin III, but I am less a fan of that album.

While I long loved Led Zeppelin II, I had forgotten just how good Zeppelin I is.

It seems Jimmy Page is remastering the Zeppelin catalog on a constant basis and regularly re-re-re-releasing material. I wish someone would do that with the Police once since Message in the Box came out decades ago.

Early Andy.

Zoot Money's Big Roll Band's album Were You There - Live 1966. Zoot Money's Big Roll Band was the first big band with Andy Sommers (as he was then called).

You can see young Andy in this picture on the CD cover where he is the short guy on the left side:
http://www.amazon.com/Were-You-There-Li ... B00000IN54

This was my first time listening to the band and I was not terribly impressed. The band was part of the English blues movement in the mid-1960s and mostly did blues covers with some big band jazz. While I have been listening to a fair amount of blues lately, including great versions by English performers such as Jeff Beck and various Eric Clapton bands, this did not do much for me. Not that I have a great ear for such things, but I couldn't recognize Andy's guitar playing and the saxophone was more dominant than the guitar playing.

I did enjoy some of Andy's other 1960s work such as with Dantalian's Chariot (which is basically Zoot Money's band doing psychedelic music) and Eric Burdon and The Animals's Love Is, but less so this CD.

The other Zoot Money's Big Roll Band's love album, Live at Klook's Kreek is more famous and may be better.

Katz and kittens,
check out the new CD from the Sam Roberts Band "Lo-Fantasy"
I'm totally diggin' this entire freakin' album.
http://samrobertsband.com/

Sam has proven time after time that he is a force to be reckoned with on the Canadian music scene since "Brother Down" came out in around 2000. I'm expecting "Lo-Fantasy" to be a Juno award contender when nominations are submitted (Juno awards are the Canadian version of the Grammy awards).

Very sorry to have missed his appearance at the Squamish Music Festival this summer as Squamish is so close to our house. I just can't handle those festival type shows anymore: general admission, standing for eight hours in 35 degree heat etc, guess I'm just too damn old for that now.
