STEWART: about your bass drum "Police" logo ?

Just wondering about something painfully trivial.

Have you kept a stock of "The Police" front bass drum skins in the closet?

...or did you or Jeff run out to Kinko's?

It always was the best looking one of all the bands I thought.

(The Jam looked cool too, it's the simple names I guess.)

Not to burst your bubble, but I bet it's the same thing that I did with mine- just a simple vinyl logo on a black Tama head.

I'd love to see what fun Police stuff Stewart has stashed away- you just know there's some awesome things with great stories behind them!

I just sold two Rototoms to my buddy and I bought 2 TAMA Mini Tymps (6' and 8') really small chrome reggae drums!

(I know Stewart used to have one Rototom up occasionally.)

I think he prefers the Octobans..and why wouldn't he!

have been seriously considering ordering a big new tama starclassic kit ( in the newly available blue sparkle finish for some strange reason)
( i presume he is using the starclassic maple not the bubinga....though i preffer the bubinga...as is the fashion recently)

Think id have to get somebody to do me a matching police head too.

There's a Copeland snare on Ebay now - you guys really like yours? I am thinking about gettng it but it's a decent piece of coin and I just got a new set. I am also after a set ot low-pitch Tama Octobans but they dont come up very often on Ebay and I sure as hell aint paying $700 for a new set of them!

I need to make more money!

My trusted man at my local drum shop ...who seems to really know his stuff and loves SC tells me that the SC snare is nice enough but not worth the money.

It also seems it is not that difficult to get hold of v similar tama snares from the period of the original SC one.



Re octobans ...it seems there are loads of places that now make octobans...but generally acrylic ones.
I am after some too but dont want clear perspex.......i am looking into whether one could get some appropriate glue and put either black or blue sparkle drum wrap onto them.
dunno your location but in uk check out peace drums via birmingham drum centre or highwood drums.......who make beautifull custom kits


By the way ive always presumed that the "dubious provenance" statement re the snare kinda meant he may have nicked it from somewhere......anybody have any thoughts on this??

I saw the snare on Ebay as well. It's a little expensive for a used one, especially one that has been modified; the seller replaced the die-cast batter side hoop with a 2.3mm mighty hoop. It's not a big deal, but I prefer all the original parts, just me. I recently bought one new for $20 less online- the shipping was free as well. I'm not trying to talk you out of it - just a heads-up.

I think that Stewart didn't know the origin or make of his original snare, hence the dubious provenance comment. He asked Tama to take it and duplicate it, they came up with the SC model. That's the way I understand it, I may be wrong

Octobans - I have a set of Peace Octobans, they are aluminum, not fiberglass and don't sound great to my ears, plus the way the stand is designed limits their placement in my kit - the hardware mounts are at the top of the drum, so your heads are basically in line with the center of the stand, you dont get the 'reach' that you do with the Tama Octobans which are mounted more or less in the center of the drum length.

I paid the full price and though it was a lot I think it was worth it.

When you record it you actually have that Copeland snare sound.

I have wanted that for years...it smokes the reggae vibe!

I think I remember that the eBay guy wanted about $350 for it used (and modified), didn't he? If you're willing to buy online, a quick google search can get you a new one for that or even slightly less. (Edit: as Skip seems to have just said. Sorry for the repeat.)

I've totally recorded with it, and it is the best. I guess it won't float everyone's boat nor do I expect it to. But it sure does for me!

I have a 13" Tama Soprano snare to the left of my hats that acts as my secondary snare or timbale with the snare off. 90% of the time the SC snare is my main, but I sometimes switch to the StarClassic Maple. It is nice to have something fat and warm to change things up from the crack of the SC snare, but in recording man is it good! The tech at the last studio I recorded at thought I was nuts to use it, but it was music to my ears.
