Ennio Morricone

Gio,

You mentioned him a few weeks ago when he was awarded an honorary Oscar. I never heard of him before but have read recently that he did soundtracks for westerns. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any of the movies he scored? Are there any classics I should watch? I have Netflix, so I might as well check out a few westerns. I don't think I've ever seen one in its entirety.

Thanks!

Three classic 'spaghetti westerns' scored by Morricone are A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (all starring Clint Eastwood, directed by Sergio Leone)...I'm sure Gio & others will be able to fill in more!

You can add "Once upon a time in the west", starring Bronson and Fonda (still Sergio Leone). For me it's the best western (and movie) Leone directed. Morricone music here is absolutely fantastic, too.
There are many other movies, other than westerns, featuring Morricone music, such as "Mission", starring De Niro.

I'm using a mix of the original and a new updated version on a tribute album of "the good the bad and the ugly" as a kite competition piece this season.

fun stuff!

He's done some great material, over the years, truly a classic.

OK, one more question - what movie has the original version of Ecstasy of Gold? I've recently been turned on by Metallica's cover, so I'd like to hear the original.

Thanks!

Morricone wrote tons of soundtracks, the most important ones already mentioned.
I am sure that when you will listen to some of the mentioned ones you will easily recognise them...and you will say: Ah, I know this one....

I don't know about the other Metallica cover movie issue, sorry.
