Decent being the operative - and difficult to achieve - word.

My own opinion any more is to let past glories lie untouched and untainted (the '86 tracks did enough tainting, thanks). Each of the three has gone off into far too disparate directions IMHO to be able to pull it together into something truly wonderful and magical again.

I also wonder if in today's music world it's really possible for ANY one band/act to be "Kings" again. Everything is too immediate, fractured, disposable. The really great music being produced is rarely breaking the top of the charts, let alone being played on the radio. It's a much more niche market, for good and bad. And I honestly have no idea what niche a new Police album could even fit in to successfully.

I guess I meant successful in artistic terms more than commercial terms. The reunion tour was more than I ever thought possible, so why not imagine the unthinkable, a new studio recording. Granted, two members would probably have to be willing to allow the third member to call most of the shots, but I really think that it is possible to make a new record. It would sell millions, it would receive tons of press, and it would continue the Police story line in a positive way. Maybe it's too much to ask, but if they were able to abide each other for a huge and lengthy tour, couldn't they also crank out a few new tunes? Perhaps Hugh Padgham has some free time available.

Sting gave us an inadvertent clue in 1985:

I created your body, just as I created your mind. And I can uncreate it too.

Damn you Sting for uncreating The Police

And I have doubts on both fronts.

The reunion tour was more than I ever thought possible

Agreed, more or less, although this was interesting - a week or so ago I sat down and watched "Certifiable" again for the first time since, well, probably since within months of the end of the tour/its initial release. And while there was much about it I still loved and thought was great and awesome (about their performances - I still maintain Certifiable is a horrible, lifeless concert film), with some emotional distance I could be a lot more critical about things I wasn't so crazy about in retrospect. And a lot of that comes down to the reinterpretation of the songs, "Stingifications" I really didn't care for (very notable in Truth Hits Everybody more than anywhere else...meanwhile I still love the tour version of Wrapped Around Your Finger better than the original and a lot of THAT has to do with the "Stewification" of the percussive elements.)

Granted, two members would probably have to be willing to allow the third member to call most of the shots

And this is partly why I don't need it. My favorite Police music is from the early days when you could feel it was much more of a democracy and give-and-take of creativity. An album where one leads and the other two are little more than glorified session players would do nothing for me. I am much happier enjoying the new music Stewart creates on his own and with others today (a la the Sacred Grove tracks), I'm curious to hear more about Sting's musical; I want to hear Andy really jam it up in a club setting again. I honestly want all of these things far more than a Police-reunion album that I just feel would have far higher chances of failure than success.

It would sell millions

To whom? Who is really buying albums today? The industry today is all about live touring and tie-in merch, you only sell physical albums to the die-hard collectors/audiophile and/or if you throw in sufficient physical-album only bonuses.

it would receive tons of press

Like the tour did? (That is, hardly any unless there was a scandal they could glom onto a la "Disaster Gig")

and it would continue the Police story line in a positive way

But only if it were truly up to the ground breaking, energetic, creative and hit-making levels of those 5 original studio albums. And that's a hell of a lot to ask for after all of this time (And when none of the band members are young, hungry and desperately wanting/needing to make it big.)

I'm not meaning to be a complete downer here, just pragmatic. The more I actually contemplate the pie-in-the-sky idea of a new album, the less I think it could ever live up to what any of us fans would actually want to hear.

Sockii, I don't disagree with any of your points; everything you bought to the discussion is realistic. It is great to have Stewart continually making new music. I am so impressed with all his abilities, not just the drums, but everything else as well. Andy is a genius on guitar and I love everything he does, whether it's jazz or rock. And of course Sting has his own empire, etc, etc. I'm just daydreaming of course, wanting the one thing that I can't have, which is basically for my favorite band from the 80s to make more great music together.

Good arguments on both sides but really the Police was the 3 of them and they would not be willing to follow Sting and I think he knows and respects his fellow band mates An Album could be done with all three of them fighting it out ...that's what I expect from them. Put them into a recording Studio and let them emerge with black eyes, broken bones, and a Fucking great Album!
...plus throw in the aborted studio tracks from '86, including DSSCTM '86 with Sting's Synclavier drum tracks vs. Stewart's Fairlight or whatever (I'm not sure who won that battle.)
Ha, Ha drummike, The final snare sound is a combination of BOTH!

I've not heard anything regarding 2013. Sorry!

They've all gone on such incredible musical journeys and to explore together, what they have mastered individually could be a revolutionary recording. There would have to be a heavy referee! LOL If the material was there, it would be killer!

I'd pay good money for *just* the studio jams themselves.

The referee comment was to do with the band not the fans! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. No way would I want to insert myself into that boiling pot. Besides, I'm still recuperating from the experiences on tourzilla!
