...And thoughts to all of those braving the crass commercial onslaught this weekend while either mourning lost mothers, or their lost hopes for ever achieving motherhood. For some of us it is the most painful "holiday" of the year and the less said of it the better.

Arise, then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts,
whether our baptism be that of water or of fears!

Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by
irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking
with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be
taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach
them of charity, mercy and patience.

We women of one country will be too tender of those of another
country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From
the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own.
It says "Disarm, Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance
of justice."

Blood does not wipe our dishonor nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons
of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a
great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women,
to bewail and commemorate the dead.

Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the
means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each
bearing after their own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
but of God.

In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a
general congress of women without limit of nationality may be
appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at
the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the
alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement
of international questions, the great and general interests of
peace.

Julia Ward Howe
Boston
1870

The modern Mother’s Day, with its apolitical message, emerged in the early Twentieth Century, with Howe’s original intent largely erased from the mainstream consciousness. Howe’s vision of an antiwar mother’s call to action was watered-down into an annual expression of sentimentality.

Like most other holidays (including religious ones), Mother’s Day in capitalist America has been transformed into just another expectation of gift-buying and gift-giving.

What was originally a call to mobilize outraged mothers to keep their sons and husbands from going off half-cocked to kill and die for some corporate war profiteer or other, became just another opportunity to market non-essential consumer goods.

Wow, sockii, I didn't know that about the origins of Mother's Day. That's powerful. Thanks for educating us!

I'm also an "un-Mum", but I'll be seeing my mother Sunday, as well as my nieces who lost their mother (my sister) last year. It will be a painful holiday for us as well. But we will try to stay positive and focus on the good things.

In the spirit of the original meaning of the holiday, let's all try to keep the peace and be kind to each other.

Mothers day in England happened in March and since me and my daughter were both working that day we went out for lunch the day before which was very nice.

My daughter gave me a blue ceramic pot for growing strawberries in and I planted them a couple of weeks ago. The pot was second hand and 'aged' nicely. I love my gardening and aged or weathered stuff always looks the best. I also have lots of old stone pots and troughs of varying sizes and a stone bird bath which I inherited from my own Mum who died some years ago and who also loved gardening. They weigh a bloody tonne and drive the removal guys crazy whenever I move house but I could never leave them behind.

May all you American Mum's, son's and daughters have a day of happiness and good memories.

All the Best on Mother's Day to any Nutter Mother, any Nutter's Mother (including all the Mrs.'s Copelands regardless of generation).
Never thought about or pined about being one, but I guess have found myself in that role by virtue of the ex boyfriend's 2 grandsons having to live w/ him overnight-literally- at 3yrs & 18 mo.'s old those boys were. Parents relentlessly AWOL ever since. Had to, really, commit to those two, regardless of how things progressed w/ ex (ultimately co-operatively). A huge burden on him, altho' he was a pretty young papaw at the time, life changing for me. Still involved, the oldest graduates HS in 2 weeks, and then has chosen to serve w/ Marine Corp., younger will be a certified diesel mechanic when he gets out.
Never asked or assumed to be called 'mom' or seen that way, still start to feel reeaaalllly tired if someone says to me hey don't you want to have kids? Said no to a lot of stuff/opportunities & stayed around some crappy work situations to be close by to those two-surprisingly, at their request when given a choice (really did surprise me). One of best situations, after all, that I never sought to be in. Would never have asked for it, can't believe got this far and the Boys still want me in their lives).

Both my folks are great examples of putting one's head down and doing what needs to be done. My Mom always brings a fresh eye and spirit to the room, and she is 85. A very Happy to her, too.
