I've been a veg on and off since I was 12. more on than off until my daughters were all born- and having 4 other meat eaters in the house I got lazy.
Now that my new spouse is a veg as well, it's easier cooking good lean veg protein for two. He can't have as much protein as I need, due to liver issues. But I eat a little extra and we're good.
I was a vegan many years ago, and it was MUCH harder then, especially with traveling. It can still be a challenge, esp when not at home, but things like my Happy Cow app on my phone show me good vegan and vegan friendly options at places.
The meat substitutes are much better these days, as are the vegan cheeses. And in LA? Spoiled for choice with healthy vegan options at restaurants. It would have been very difficult years ago. I think I wasn't getting quite enough protein a couple months ago, but now feel really good. That said, it might be I'm training again!
That said, I am more in favor of fresh, local and not pre-packaged and refined foods most of all. When we lived in NZ, I got way spoiled because we lived near an organic butcher and they raised most of their animals. As humane as that industry can get. But frankly, there is way too much crap and GMO in the meat here, and I am doing just fine!
I became a vegan again a couple months ago as the dairy was REALLY messing with my sinuses. SO much better and so is my skin since quitting dairy. And it's been pretty fun challenging myself in the kitchen. I'm getting pretty good at vegan cupcakes
