I haven't heard that one EQ but it's probably true. He, and a gazillion other drummers, were very influenced by Mitch and Keith in the early days. I've just been listening to CTA's (Chicago Transit Authority before changing their name to Chicago) first album and Danny Seraphine kicks ass on that album. Rock on!

You know what strikes me about this isolated track--less about the guitar, bass, and vocals stripped out--is how much more his drumming, without the wild, visual performance, manages to stay out of the way. I won't call it understated, natch, but it's much more fundamental and what the song requires than I'd expect--completely different to just listen to it on its own without the visual showboating. Haven't listened to the Who in quite a while...it surprised me, but in a different way, this time :)

I agree. Moon was not playing just to play. He really knew how to fit his style in so it meshed perfectly with Pete and The Ox.

I'll say it again. LOVE the Who. Moon is inimitable.

I will say I saw the Who a couple years ago with Zach Starkey playing drums. WHOA. Dude can play and wasn't trying to imitate Moon or live up to anything. He was just awesome in his own right. And fit well with Pete.

Yeah, I've seen Zach with The Who a number of times and he is quite impressive. Worthy very much in his own way.

EEEYEAHHHHH!!!

When he was on, he was freakin' ON!!! Two things always strike me when I listen to this track: 1) the sheer power and intensity with which he played and 2) how damn well he maintains the tempo.

And don't get me started on that snare and those cymbals...

I think there's a little of him in all of us 8)

Yes, the isolated Keith Moon tracks doing the rounds are quite something, and this one is right up there. However, I think the drum track for "Goin' Mobile" is even more impressive - that one is just downright scary. Hopefully a drum track for "Bargain" surfaces one day!
