Jose, Pisco sounds intriguing. I wonder where it might be found in the US.

"Pisco" is a great liquor made by 100% grapes (In spite of the fact I dont drink any type of alcohol beverage)... "Pisco" have differences between the grape strains, they are "Acholado", "Mosto Verde", "Italia", "Quebranta", etc. ( I mean the types of "Pisco", I think the most reputable are "Acholado" and "Italia")

I think you could find it on US, in the most finest shops specialized in liquor, but the most important thing is to buy "Peruvian Pisco" (not the chilean) in words of Anthony Bourdain the chilean Pisco not have any to do with peruvian... and the reality is that peruvian is the unique the best it comes from the 17th century in "Pisco" (Ica - Next to Nazca Lines - Pisco is the country yard of great grapes strains in Peru and the place of the most terrible earthquakes in recent decades) by the reputation of "Pisco" (liquor) Chileans found a little city called "Pisco" too for registering it like the denomination of origin "Pisco", but finally it not taste the same, some says chilean Pisco taste horrible, after you taste peruvian Pisco of course...

"Peruvian Pisco" win and won lot of awards in Europe in the category of "Spirituals Liquors" (Gold, Silver medals...etc) So your definetely choose will be "Peruvian Pisco"... I recommend you to search the recipes of "Pisco Sour" or "Algarrobina" (both cocktails made with Pisco) but the best recommendation is to drink it in Peru (by the ingredients) and watching what those beautifuls peruvian "Paso" horses dance in the rythm of music and snare drums...

Watch this nice video of lot of girls (Amazonas) and boys (Chalanes) dancing with their peruvian "Paso" horses:

I really hope Stanley plays standard bass on the tour. The upright just doesn't quite do it for me.

The EBYT video traumatized me to the point where I've become "uprightbassphobic".

I find it harder to hear, too. Especially with someone like STEWART cracking birds out of the sky :)

However, having said all that, if anyone could change my opinion of upright bass, it would most definitely be Mr. Clarke!

I, on the other hand, LOVE Stanley playing the stand-up bass...Maybe it had to do with the fact I saw him at the Blue note, perched on one of the stools at the end of the bar, where I could periodically look out onto W. 3rd St. passers-by, and where I could not only hear but feel the percussive dimension of the way in which he played, something that I find dampened to a degree with a standard bass...

ETA: (definitely atmosphere, nature, and size of venue dependent)

While I always prefer seeing and hearing Stanley with the electric bass, I have to say that when I saw him on the SMV tour with Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten, he was amazing on the upright bass which gave me a whole new appreciation for the instrument.

The upright bass rules over the one you sling over you shoulder, especially when experienced live and in person where you can feel the plucking and the slapping. But then i'm partial because my late dad was a bluegrass musician and the upright bass was one of the many instruments he mastered.

Maybe it's better in a small room, cuz even amplified I've had trouble hearing it. Mind you, I couldn't hear Stingo's bass all too well on Tourzilla either.

Gotta hear that slap n pluck!

Upright bass! The resonance, the deep, warm tones, the wonderful, polished wood...mmmm.

OT: Conroy, you last 4 (?) avatars are GRAND! Love 'em.

Saw Mr. Clarke on the upright with Return to Forever...another vote in the "awesome" column...but we'll just have to wait & see.

I may have read this thread too quickly, but I've gathered that Stewart and Stanley Clarke will be doing a bar tour around Europe in which they make pisco sours using the slap 'n' pick method.

Sounds like a stellar time regardless. Enjoy, Europe!
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.
