Wiki blackout tomorrow?

Wiki blackout tomorrow?

Postby moonstone on 17 Jan 2012 16:39

Just heard the back end of something on the news about a 24 hour wiki blackout tomorrow.

Anyone know if that's right?

Wikipedia did the same in Italy some time ago, in protest to the Italian SOPA.
I hope it will appeal to people's awareness of censorship

I'm blacking out my Facebook feed tomorrow in support of the protest against SOPA/PIPA. I'll probably take down my business site as well.
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

Oh Ok, now I understand.

There's been very little about it on the news in England until this morning.

Looking forward to it.

I'm not blacking out anything today - for one I'm far too busy to figure out how with about ten different websites to do so (plus Dietmar would probably kill me if I took down the wiki). It also sucks for me as an internet content writer - I can't get to a ton of my reference sites today and it's gonna make work a real PITA.

I guess it might make some people "aware", but probably a lot of other people will just ignore it or post memes on Twitter and Facebook and feel like they've accomplished something.

But that's just cynical me talking.

How to access Wikipedia during the blackout for those who need it to make a living:

I like this take on the issue:

What I would like to know is why no one is talking about House Representative Darryl Issa's deviously manipulative machinations that would make Senator Palpatine proud. Issa, who lead the House effort to oppose SOPA, just happens to chair an oversight committee that is looking into DNS and Search Engine blocking, which are the most egregious parts of the SOPA/PIPA bills, to punish the sites that violate IP laws. http://www.redstate.com/neil_stevens/20 ... tax-looms/. I believe there is a lot of Jedi Mind Trickery afoot with the SOPA/PIPA. The SOPA/PIPA bills were as dead-on-arrival as the half-hearted effort to by congress to deal with member's insider trading that got conveniently tabled and quickly forgotten right before the biggest jedi mind trick of them all: the end of year holiday break.

But Conroy, you're expecting people to look beyond surface moral outrage and Facebook memes of internet slacktivism. Which rarely ever happens.

Yeah, I was already seeing mention of OPEN by midday -- but of course, I'd like to actually get to read the thing before determining if it's a "suitable alternative" (yaddayadda).

Oatmeal also posted a direct URL outside the home page, which will likely last past the blackout for those who may have missed it: http://theoatmeal.com/sopa

sigh...I guess I'm just going to have to start also reading right-wing sources to stay informed, no matter how much it makes my blood pressure go up.

(Edited out unnecessarily partisan commentary.)

And so it begins. Are you scared? Because if you're not, and you do anything on the web, you really should be (and not just because of SOPA/PIPA but just in general, right now. Things could get really ugly, really fast, and if you have a site for anything or are involved in any kind of fandom activity I suggest making sure you've backed up all of your work.)

One of the largest filesharing sites on the web has been shut down and workers indicted.
