I'm reading "The Book of Drugs" by Mike Doughty, songwriter extraordinaire and former Soul Coughing. MOST excellent.

Just started "Blood And Ice" by Robert Masello.

"Bestiary" & "Vigil" (also by Masello) are worthy readings, in a crypto-paleo-mythic kinda way.

Just finished Fever of the bone by Val McDermid. I do like a bit of murder mystery.

Also every now and then dipping into The 2nd book of General Ignorance by John Lloyd and John Mitchinson. Introduced by Stephen Fry. Someone gave me this for Christmas.
It's one of those daft general knowledge books that tells you things like Octopuses really only have 2 legs (the rest are arms) and Napoleon wasn't really a short arse, and asks things like "who invented the cat flap?" and "How do you milk a yak?"

I expect it'll be useful at the next pub quizz

Have been sick with the flu lately and finished my first two Stephen King books in at least 20 years: "Under the Dome" and "11 22 63." "Dome" was iffy - when a reader slogs through 1000 pages, the ending better be good - but "11 22" masterful. Recommended.

I've just finished reading my Foundational Theology Lecture Notes for this coming week, in which is summaraized in 19 pages the 2000 year history of Christian theology. I had to keep stopping to mop up the little puddles forming on my desk from the bits of my brain that melted and dripped out my ears.
Right now, moonstone's trivia book sounds like about all I'd want to handle. A thousand pages of Stephen King...not so much.
Hmmm...the melodious sounds of Stewart reading "Strange Things Happen" might just be what I need to sooth me towards a restful night of sleep. Where'd I put that audio book any way?

Last fall I went to a book sale and got it into my head to buy up all these books I had read in my past (and gotten rid of during my moves), including things from HS (most of which weren't so exciting the second time around...and the print is very, very small).

I still have a lot of my college art textbooks...lately re-bought a couple books I loved in my youth: "Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin and "Great Gilly Hopkins" by Katherine Paterson...

OT: Just read "I Love You and I'm Leaving Anyway," a great one by Tracy McMillan. She's a writer for Mad Men - it's a memoir of her upbringing in foster care.

The part about "bits of my brain that melted and dripped out my ears" cracked me up! Have you read Christopher Hitchens' book God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything? Another brain melter.

I am slogging my way through Annals of the Former World by John McPhee but loving it. The rocks are laughing!

Ooooh, Jeff, that sounds fascinating! There's a whole series of "roadside geology" books that are fun to have if you're on a road trip, and this sounds like a similarly interesting one. I am team teaching a course this spring on environmental sustainability with a geologist and a philosopher, and it's making abundantly clear to me how little I know.

My current bedtime read is the Federalist Papers; I am about 2/3 of the way through, and it's reminding me of the insights of the country's founders.

Gosh, what I'm reading sounds so dry by comparision. I'm working on four books right now, which might explain why I make little progress with any of them (but that is a different discussion). I'll be on planes this week and that will turn pages on at least one of them.

These are wonderful books Ladyhawke. I started off reading them to my daughter when she was 10 and got totally taken over by the whole story. I have the whole collection and have re-read them probably more than any other books.

I'm about to start reading Landed on the moon by Johnny Mack who is an ex London gangster who moved to the Isle of Wight where I live.

yes moonstone friend the harry potter books are so good to read. you are reading about gangsters in london where you live? this sound rough but good to. one of my daughters wants to move to london when shes old enough.
