I read a few magazines religiously..and no.... they're not about religion! I read "The Week" newsmagazine. I can't recommend it highly enough for a brief synopsis of current events, "Runner's World, Cub's Vineline and Men's Health" - Monthly In addition to that, I try to read a book or two a month. A few good ones I just finished are "Sting and I" by James Berryman and "Marathon Woman" by Kathrin Switzer. Both highly recommended! I just got "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. Thats next!
Stay ready...to cut and run.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winnifred Watson - a book I'd never heard of which a friend brought to the festival I was at this past weekend. It was so good I missed seeing The Vaselines in order to try and finish it  A delightful, witty (but light) read.

I am on my way to finish a book about Milan, the city where I was born and I grew up; it's good to know more about the place where you come from, and I discovered so many interesting news about my place, so cool!
Now I'm at the Mussolini chapter, as he started his 'adventure' here...he was hanged just 10 minutes away from where I live (but I alredy knew that).

I just finished One Train Later. Loved it! Andy is a really good writer.

I guess I'll be getting Sting's book next.

I finished "The Catcher in the Rye" some weeks ago. I really really loved it! By now I'm reading the original 1951 version of "On The Road" by Jack Kerouak and "Wall and Piece" by the british street artist called Banksy. I highly reccomend both of them. 8)
"Wall and Piece" by the british street artist called Banksy.
I was reading or rather looking at the art work in this one a couple of weeks back. It belongs to my daughter who was an art student and has left all her books with me whilst she's been off doing other things. One of those books that make you smile out loud. The back cover shows a quote from a metropolitan police spokesperson. It says

"There is no way you're going to get a quote from us to use on your book cover"

and that kind of sums the book up. Clever, funny and well worth a look.

Myself I've just finished reading The Horse Boy by Rupert Isaacson which I got for my birthday. It's a true story about a little boy with autism, and his parents who take him on a trip from Texas to Mongolia, the spiritual home of the horse, to try to help him.

Wow! It's been almost a year since this thread was last active. So, did anyone get any good books as gifts over the holiday? What authors are you snuggling up with on these cold winter nights? (Or taking to the beach, you Southern Hemishperers?)

In keeping with this thread's first post, I'd like to recommend to Stewart and any other Old Testament fans "Reading the Old Testament" by Lawrence Boadt. It was the book we used as our text book in my Masters of Theology course this fall. Despite that, it's an easy read. More importantly, it gives the historical/political/literary context that allows the reader to make a whole lot more sense out of some of the weirder stuff in the OT. It was written in the 80's, but just like a certain band from that era, it is still excellent and relevant today.

I recently upgraded my e-Reader from a Sony PRS-350 to a Sony PRS-T1. Sony had a great trade-in program last month and I got $50 credit for my old reader and they were running a $50 off promotion so I wound up only paying $50 out of pocket for the new ereader which rocks. It runs android under the hood so it can be hacked to do cooler things than it can out of the box, including installation of the Kindle app. And I also got a refurbished Kindle DX for $200 off W00t the other day. Anyway, I just finished Dick Van Dyke's memoir over Christmas which was fantastic especially if you are a fan of classic tv shows. I just started reading Paul Allen's memoir over the weekend and it is also a great read, especially if you are a computer geek like me.

I will probably get the Kingmakers: Invention of the Modern Middle East next. I hope one day we'll be able get ebook editions of Stewart's dad's books which have long been out of print but definitely are a must read to get a full grasp of what is going on in the Middle East and Ian's Wild Thing. it is a shame Ian never did an audiobook for Wild Thing. That would have rocked!

I'm currently reading The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. After that I plan to delve into The Magician's Book: A Skeptic's Adventures in Narnia by Laura Miller.

To the Limit: The Untold Story of the Eagles
It was ok, but after a string a music autobiographies, then this one, i think from now on i am going to stick to only autobiographies. When an outsider gives the story it just becomes a bunch of boring music industry facts and figures and boringness. i want the artist's perspective, the first hand, emotional journey....
