Huh, well, I had Warren Zevon and Elton John on my list b/c whenever I see a "Top 10 Group" list I always assume that "solo" artists are to be considered as well. B/c I don't tend to think of them differently anyway - every great solo artist usually has a dedicated group of session/touring musicians or writers to help make them such a success.

I hate every top 10 list (except for the Letterman show) because lazy magazine editors use it to fill up space in their rags instead of paying good writers, but here's mine:

The Police
Joy Division/New Order
The Smiths
The Pixies
The Who
Pink Floyd
The Kinks
Heart
The Pretty Things
The Dares

close runners up - James, Husker Du, Sugar, the Verve, Electronic, the Damned, Orbital, the Cure, Southern Culture on the Skids and too many others to mention. I'm sure if I had laid the list out tomorrow, it would be a totally different list of bands except for the Police which is the only constant in my top 10 band list.

from Bab's list - Hayes Carll! I'll be damned. Saw him at Bonnaroo this year and thought he was just awesome.

I keep trying to do this and failing miserably, for the simple fact that my top 10 varies so much depending on what's going on in my life. But if I had to list bands that I make damn sure are on my IPod whenever I leave for a trip someplace...

Nick Lowe
Paul Kelly (Australian rocker, not American R&B-er)
Neko Case
The Clash
Nina Simone
Of course I love the Police, but honestly these days I listen to Stewart's solo projects more often.
Elvis Costello
Beatles
John Lennon solo
OK, I fucking love Green Day. I admit it...;)

But then...Earlier tonight I had on Spotify and went from Slayer to Johnny Mathis to Eddie Cochran. So I just dunno. God, there are so many bands I'd list here. How can I leave off AC/DC? And the Flaming Lips, who saved my life as a teen (by playing nearby when I was stuck in middle of nowhere Kansas and letting me know freaky and weird as a way of life?) Motorhead, which I listen to constantly? Freaking Elvis - the dead one, who I grew up with... Wanda Jackson, who I want to be when I grow up... Jack White, Karen Elson, Black Belles or somebody else from Third Man Records, who are doing so much of an awesome nature here in Nashville... U2 or REM, who I loved with all my heart for years upon years...

OK, giving up now. ;)

Here is mine, which reads like a sample size of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. One and two are far above the rest.

It would be different if I had Stewart and George Harrison separate form their most famous bands.

1. Beatles (and George Harrison solo)
2. Police (and Stewart and Andy solo)
3. Jimi Hendrix Experience
4. Steve Winwood (especially Blind Faith)
5. Led Zeppelin
6. Rolling Stones
7. Buddy Holly
8. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
9. Bob Dylan
10. Eric Clapton
SC-There are a few crazy people on this planet. Sure sign of that is that they kinda like my music
