I wonder if this is what they already are planning to play on tour, or if it was just a preliminary list to jam on.
The tour is still several months out. It has to be a preliminary list.
This must be Andy's stand, because the book open to Rehumanize Yourself is guitar tab.
I'd argue that it's Sting's stand. Andy don't need no tab.
The OBVIOUS ONES, CAN'T ARGUE:
Magic
Surprised to see it considering how much trouble it gave them in the studio and how much trouble it was for Sting to sing on the following tour.
De Do Do Do -- the lyrics are kind of annoying and cheesy, but the music is good, and it was a hit, so OK, if you have to...
Cheesy? If that's cheesy, so is a good third of all the pop songs ever written. De Do Do Do, shares a similar lyrical thread with a great many of them (miscommunication). It's also a tremendous song live.
Synchronicity II -- the Loch Ness monster thing is kind of cheesy, but it's a good rock song, and somewhat well known
Again with the cheese? The "Loch Ness Monster thing" is metaphor. Not a dairy product.
Invisible Sun -- kind of slow for a live performance
And yet they played it at nearly every show since GHOST was released. And, in fact, prior to the Grammys, it was the last song they played together in public.
One World -- very drippy hippie sentiment, pretty mediocre song
A simple song that also shines very brightly in a live scenario. One thing that the Police proved time after time is that "simple" doesn't automatically equal "mediocre."
SONGS I WISH THEY WOULDN'T PLAY:
Tea in the Sahara -- not as bad, but it's a song that starts out slow and quiet and stays that way, and the lyrics make no sense--maybe somebody can explain them to me
It's about broken promises.
sounds like Sting solo material, not the Police
Tea In The Sahara is probably the single greatest example of Andy's "warbling cloud." It's a signature sound.
Murder By Numbers -- lounge music. weak lyrics.
I think that's a band favorite. It's certainly one of Sting and Andy's favs. The lyrics are about the manipulation of large groups of people. The music is based on a jazz chord progression.
nothing more to be said.
And yet you keep going!
SONGS I THINK THEY OUGHT TO PLAY:
Instead of some of the ones in the last two groups--
Omegaman -- Good up-tempo song, Andy's best-written
It's decent, but if they are going to play one of Andy's songs, I'd prefer "Friends." It's darker, cooler, and has a greater potential for improvisation. To my knowledge, they've never done it live - which makes it one of the most surprising Police songs they could choose.
No Time This Time -- awesome song, maybe hard for them to pull off live at their age... Would be a perfect closer.
Age has nothing to do with it. Only ability and attitude (which they all still have). I agree that it would be a decent closer, but they already have a much better, signature one in "So Lonely."
Darkness -- Stewart's best song, one of my favorite Police songs -- maybe not an ideal live song, but it's a better "slow" song than some of the ones above.
It's one of my favorites as well. However, I don't really see it (or hear it rather) as an arena performance song. But I'm certain they could find a way to change that.
Replace Walking, Tea, Murder, One World, and either Synch II or Invisible Sun with those, and I'd call it close to perfect. Just my opinion, though.
To each his own!
