Andy Summers' XYZ tour 1987

Andy Summers' XYZ tour 1987

Postby Dietmar on 15 Sep 2011 07:23

I could need some help concerning the "missing" Andy Summers concerts from his 1987 XYZ tour.

so far I've found these:

http://www.policefans.org/Police_wiki/i ... 7_XYZ_Tour

I've read some articles and reviews which mention that they rehearsed in New York and that they performed at least one more gig in Toronto with T'Pau.

Could the people who own the Poughkeepsie recording listen to it if Andy mentions anything (like "first concert" or yesterday X-town, tomorrow Y-town) ??

any interesting information from the other known recordings would be great to know, too!

thanks

Hello Dietmar;
I attended the Palace show in Hollywood and I noticed there is a show missing from the next night. Andy played The Strand in Redondo Beach, CA on 8/9. It was the clubs grand opening after being a restaurant for ages. I have pretty decent up front photos from this show and might have a ticket stub from one or both of the shows. If you are interested I can scan and send to you. Sidenote from the Palace show, Miles held a post show party for Andy in the backroom of the bar that I somehow did not get asked to leave. Kim Turner was in tow both nights w/ Andy as well.

OT: I also have photos from the Animal Logic first tour from this club as well. Photos are grainey, though. Jeff hooked me up w/ an autograph and drumstick which was very kind.

Thanks,
P-Love

I saw Andy during this tour when he played in a club in Hoboken, NJ.

I thought it was a great show. Andy sang most of the songs including a couple of Police tunes. He was pretty good.

However, Nan Verdon (sp?) sang a couple a songs including Tea in the Sahara. In my opinion, that was the best version of Tea that I've ever heard. And that includes The Police and Sting solo. The singing and the band were outstanding. Andy's guitar playing was awesome.

I wish there was a high quality production video of that show.

BTW, does anybody know if Andy has recovered from his leg injury?

good to know that!

any idea what club that was in ?
He played at "Live Tonight" in 1990... maybe he was there before...

any chance you still have a ticket or something else from that gig ?

Andy played his Buenos Aires gig, so he should be alright now!

I'm jealous of P-Love having seen Andy in a small club in Redondo. I saw him on that tour at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. He was on the middle of the bill, the headliners were Siouxsie & The Banshees, opening act was Julian Cope. Cope was great. Andy's playing was great but his singing wasn't earning him any new fans...

Thank you Dietmar, for the good news about Andy !

Perhaps this is old news for most , but just in case
for those wondering about Andy like I was...
I came across an article in an Argentian website
( 26 noticias.com) noting that...
Andy was playing twice on the same day on 13Sep
in Buenos Aires "with legendary Brazilian bossa-nova-ist
Roberto Menescal"
It also explained that the complex union between one of the fathers of
the Bossa Nova and Andy began in 2006 when Menescal was recording
a version of Roxanne, when a friend told him that Andy was asking
about him. The two had lunch and got to know each other...
The suggestion came up of doing Bossa Nova arrangments of more
P tunes after Andy really liked a bossa nova version of De Do ..

Roberto Menescal suggested a singer who interpreted lyrics well in English
and arrived at Brazilian singer Cris Dellano. The presentations in Brazil
with Cris in Sao Paul were very well received..

While this was happening, the P reunion tour happened, but both artists
remembered that they would work on another project together after the tour
was over...
After 2 years , they got back together and decided instead of doing a CD, they
would do a DVD, where Andy asked Menescal to show him the places where the
Bossa Nova was born.. This is how Andy got to know Ipanema, the home of Nara
Leao, and the site of the Orfeo Carnival. ( I think: my Spanish is kinda crappy.)

All this plus some presentations in Rio de Janeiro are the content of the DVD called
"United Kingdom of Ipanema" which will enter the commercial market and which
will coincide with presentations which both artists will give in Brazil."

Saw the DVD on Amazon but Sir Paul has me way to skint to be able to get it,
did anyone see it yet I wonder?
Cheers,
Sandy

I know this is moving away from this post but does anyone have the Andy Summers albums I can get a copy from? I have the Robert Fripp ones but can't seem to obtain some of the others, especially the early ones

It's great to know that Andy's better. His web site hasn't been updated in about two years. Come on, Andy. Stay in touch with your fans.

Dietmar, I'm pretty sure it was Live Tonight on Washington Street.

After the show I driving in front of the club when Andy and the band got in a taxi cab that pulled right in front of me. The taxi stopped at the next light, still in front of me. I got out of my car, ran to the cab and tapped the window, asking Andy for an autograph.

Andy actually opened the door. I handed him a pen and an album-sized poster I took from the club. The promo posters were all over the club. Andy was awesome. He was laughing when I tapped on the window. The band members were all laughing. Andy signed the poster. I jumped and yelled a big, wooohooo and ran back to my car to my cheering passengers. It was awesome and a lot of fun.Thank God, there were no cops around.

I'm not sure where I have that poster. I think I still have it.

BTW, if anybody has listened to Andy's XYZ album, I think you'll have to agree that Andy wrote some great songs with excellent lyrics. I suspect that some of these songs were presented as possible Police songs. It would be a shame if they were suggested and rejected. If Sting would have sung the songs on XYZ, it would have been a classic Police album.

you know that if you ever find that poster that I'd love to present it on the Police Wiki with a credit
and it would confirm a date and venue!

thanks for every contribution!

I added a lot of concerts on that list of XYZ concerts!

the Toronto date is still missing, but it might have been the very first one. At least this clip indicates that (and it includes Truth Hits Everybody live bits):

Thanks for all the hard work.

Taken from http://www.policefans.org/Police_wiki/i ... 1987-07-22
"There are recordings of both soundcheck and concert."

Really??? I guess this entry was copied from the Ritz date, right?

Or does Rogier really have those HRC recordings?

does anybody have the April 1987 Outlandos mini-bulletin ?
it should contain some cancelled European tourdates ...
