Do Tell About the Tell Tale Heart

Thanks for the reports. Sounds like a great show.

I am curious to see if poor Conroy develops something that makes him cough. Those trans-Atlantic flights can do that too you, as can other things. :)
During the intermission, I got to ask Stewart about the Paradise Lost piece. He got excited and wanted to talk about it but he had to restrain himself as he jumped the gun when he mentioned it in that article. As Jeff said, it is early in the conceptual stages but Stewart gave me a little insight into what he was planning. I won't spoil anything by discussing it on this forum but I have to say that one aspect that he told me he is considering is absolutely brilliant and really underscores Stewart's evolution as a modern classical composer and I hope he goes with it. I will say that he said it is going to be big. But it will be a bit of a wait but worth it.
Conroy, you are such a tease. Once again you hint at something that you don't disclose. I wish you wouldn't do that. Except, I want to know all I can so am glad you do.

I am not a big Milton fan but the project sounds very interesting.

Some more reviews, not all of them positive:

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/music/rev ... -before.do
"Zealously engaging and with few pretensions of depth, the two pieces make for a refreshing delight. . . . Jazzy piano and bass vamp away like a tormented brain."

A less favorable review: http://www.thestage.co.uk/reviews/revie ... pera-shots
"The music bumps along for 35 minutes, its propulsive rhythms crying out for tighter articulation than Robert Ziegler obtains from Chroma Chamber Ensemble on opening night."

Another less favorable review: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/ap ... ots-review
"Copeland's first mistake is to provide his own text; producing a good libretto is in some ways harder than creating the music. But even given the lumpiness of the result, Copeland's setting is woefully stilted, too often ending up as a kind of operatic rap. The rest gets stuck in rhythmic grooves."

A generally favorable blog review:
http://capricciomusic.blogspot.com/2011 ... chive.html
"Copeland's style is clearly very rooted in pop and jazz, and though this isn't at all a rock or pop score, rhythmically and harmonically and timbrally one can hear many commonalities with his more famous musical phase. The result, initially pleasantly piquant in its vitality and subtly pungeant harmony, doesn't quite have enough range to sustain purely musical interest . . ."

Thanks for the link Dietmar.

Had to laugh at one of their inconsistencies. Check out the "story hilight" below the image. It says "Police bassist tells all about his opera the Tell Tale Heart."

Too funny.

Conroy, you never fail to amaze me. How was it that you forgot your "decongestants" and yet managed to still catch the (cough) virus after all?

What is funny is that i heard Every Little Thing in the terminal right before i boarded the plane to fly home yesterday.

I think my laughter came around the time when the cops were searching the crime scene and it was choreographed to be like a keystone cops moment, if not downright Pythonesque.

excellent link, D, thank you... although it reminded me why I hate and don't listen to f'kin' Magic!! and rick comes across as a bit stoopid and Mr State-The-Bleedin'-Obvious.....

and stewart says in answer to the question "what's the best gig you've ever been involved in?"

"my favourite show that i can remember right now off the top of my head was hyde park corner from not so long ago."

>ahem< flag bearer joy.
