FOO FIGHTERS BACK AND FORTH chronicles the 16 year history of the Foo Fighters: from the band's very first songs created as cassette demos Dave Grohl recorded during his tenure as Nirvana's drummer, through its ascent to their Grammy-winning, multi-platinum, arena and stadium headlining status as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet.

Produced by Nigel Sinclair (No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, Amazing Journey the Story of the Who, The Last Play at Shea) of Exclusive Media Group's Spitfire Pictures, and produced and directed by Oscar(r) and Emmy(r) winner James Moll, FOO FIGHTERS BACK AND FORTH culminates with the making of the band's new album Wasting Light: a process in which the band pushed itself forward by going fully back to basics and recording in Grohl's garage completely on analog tape. I'm seriously bummed the nearest showing to me is 90 minutes away, near Allentown PA. Have no idea why there's nothing more local in the Philly - to - Wilmington area. SUCKS.

Anyway, nationwide technical problems. Some cities had their show cancelled all together. Most cities had their audience miss at least some of the movie. Some cities were not able to get the post movie concert in 3D. Here was my experience:

Nothing for about an hour and fifteen minutes. Once things got started, we only got a third of the screen with occasional screen "freak outs" like going double, all green, skipping, etc. And the sound sucked. Sounded like it was mono coming out of just one speaking in front.

We were then moved to another theater after about ten minutes where they said they were able to get the movie working. The movie work for the most part in the new theater, except the sound still only came out of the center speaker.

After the movie, the live show started. We were able to watch in 3D (though it seemed like the cameras were not focusing right the first few minutes). Also, the sound was still just mono from one speaker. However, the 3D was actually really good (much better, for instance, than in Clash of the Titans).

The ticket cost $21, and I guess I would have paid that much just to see the live concert since the documentary will be on Palladia this weekend anyways. However, as we left the theater, each person got two free passes for another movie (no expiration date), two free popcorns, and two free soda. Not bad, since I do not think that the problems was the fault of the theater (or the Foos, for that matter). I think the problem was with the Cinadigm.

Just some quick comments about the actual movie and concert.

As for the movie, regarding what I was able to see, it was INCREDIBLE. THIS was a fucking documentary. The part I was able to see started right around the recording of One by One and Taylor's overdose. Went in depth in the problems the band was having during that period. They had a lot of stuff regarding the recording of the next record at Dave's house. Just great, insightful stuff. Pretty much ended with their secret show at the Roxy. In short, it was just excellent. Really really done right. I've read on the web that the part I missed included lots of stuff about Nirvana and Franz and William leaving the band. Can't wait until Friday when it is broadcast on Palladia.

As far as the concert, it was kind of weird, as Dave acknowledged at the end. It was live, but in studio and not in front of an audience. It seemed like the whole band recognized that it was weird without the audience, and near the end Taylor cut the weirdness with some fake crowd noise.

It was like, but it really was not like a real live Foo show. They just ran through all of the songs from the new album in order with hardly taking any breaks, if any, between songs. There was not nearly as much expansion of the songs like they normally would in concert. To me, a Foo show without Dave talking to the crowd is not really a live Foo show. (For a good example, check out Dave's banter when he sings the love song Up in Arms to a guy in the recent Sydney show).

With that being said, the boys were TIGHT and did play very well. Dave seemed like he tried to purposely do things to increase the 3D wow factor. The best 3D was regarding Taylor. The main shot of him would be from his right over his ride. This was cool because it made the ride seem to really pop out of the screen. A great view of the Taylor which I think any floozie would appreciate. I think he was wearing boxer shorts.

Uh, I'm sure I have more to say, but I've been at work for about an hour now but I have not done anything yet (not even had my first cup of coffee yet). Hopefully others will post about their experiences.

Forgot to add this: Yesterday was the anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death. During the live concert, Dave had a "K" made out of tape on his guitar in Kurt's honor.

For Sockii, So, here's the real deal as to what theatres where.
Shown in 3D. and with the live Cinedigm 3D feed for the after movie concert, so it was shown pretty much at all the theatres that could technically handle it. So, the issue is the theatres in those areas not having the state of the art equipment apparently.
Now, what I think would have REALLY sucked would be to be one of the people that paid, got there, got their snacks, and were all waiting and then it didn't work. Or what EQ experienced
We had a 15 minute delay while they tried to get some of those theatres online. A bunch of them got refunded on the spot and sent how. THAT would have well and truly sucked. If it's any consolation, Dave said they were going to do something special about it today. FWIW, not gloating but it was truly awesome- the movie and the 3D show. Wish you could have seen it, hope you get to!

Definitely check it out on Palladia this weekend. Well worth it.

For $21 bucks, it rocked. Way hard. It wasn't a live Foos show.

We got to go to a small little pre party with drinks (no food for my girl) and the director, James Moll, organized by a local rock blogger who is super cool. Best part is we got to go into the theatre early and get great seats before they let the others in.
Best part of living in LA: our theatre worked just fine.
Worst part: half of our audience were industry douchebags.

However, LA has a GREAT Foos' fan contingent, whom Lara has had adopt me. We were pretty vocal. We had a 15 minute delay at the start, but no other issues. The sound in our room was INCREDIBLE.

The doco is fabulous. It profiled the musical/personal history of everyone in the band pre-Foos, esp of course Dave. Big section on the breakdown/end of Nirvana and Dave spoke about how it all affected him. To see that on the anniversary of Kurt's death was hard for me, without getting into personal stuff, and when he talked about going through Taylor's OD years later, you could just feel the guy's pain. It was pretty personal.
Then it went through the entire recording process of the new record, in Dave's garage, and that was truly awesome. You can see why it just kicks so much ass the way it does. (It's in heavy rotation Chez Empty and in the car as well) The entire album is kick ass.

My BF likes some Foos, but isn't a huge fan, but was riveted and said the whole thing was amazing. And the concert wasn't a live show, EQ had that pretty dead on. And, umm, I like me some Taylor, but I was insanely grateful for the camera position on Mr. Shifflett.*sigh* looked great.

It was interesting also to hear Dave's comments during the doco about how the 3 guitars work together, and then watch the "gig." It really struck me and it hadn't before. As my BF noted, it is the guitar crunch that makes this album just sing.(the drums kick ass too, but it's the wall o' guitar sound that makes it a Foos record)

Well, I'm glad I didn't try to drive nearly 2 hours and then back to/from Allentown last night if there were so many technical problems.

While it's a cool idea with the 3D and all, perhaps a less ambitious release would have been advisable if all the kinks (of the bad technical kind) hadn't been worked out yet?

I look forward to seeing the documentary - eventually - even if it's likely/hopefully just on my shitty 8 year old 4:3 out of date TV at this point

I think they are doing it in general release- it will be on VH1 for FREE, no driving, on Friday.
