New Police and Sting book written by me

New Police and Sting book written by me

Postby giovanni on 06 Mar 2011 21:15

Hello gang, I've been asked to write a new book about Sting and the Police; no title yet, no graphic cover yet, but the date of release will be around Sting's 60th birthday, that means in October, probably will be released a little earlier. The first book of The Police that I was asked to write was based on the story of the band, and I analyzed the relationship between the three members of the band, and album by album I got deep into the music, their attitude, the reason of the split and covered Sting solo career as well. The foreword was written by Stewart.

Now, the new one will be different as it will be about the lyrics of the song (The Police and Sting solo career); I'm ok with most of the songs, but for some of them I will surely need some help from all of you. Would you help me?
I already know that I won't be paid too much (what a surprise, always like that with books!!!) but I will surely manage to get some books for free to send them to who is going to help me (I will get as many books as possible).
It will be written in Italian, sorry for non-Italian readers...I hope it will have a nice cover, so that you can simply keep it in your collection.

First help: I'm working on OUTLANDOS D'AMOUR and I have written the comments to most of the songs; I'm having hard time with TRUTH HITS EVERYBODY; I can generally talk about the song, telling also that it was a Last Exit song, but can't go much further; not that I need to analyze every line, but for example, what does Sting mean with 'Take a look at my new toy, it'll blow your head in two...'? Does he refers to the 'truth' (toy)? I read any interviews where he talks about it.
I don't get it...any help? If you have more informations about the song, please let me know.

I'm afraid I will get back to you all in the future with more requests, even if basically I have stuff to say about more or less each song...but a little help from my friends will be more than welcome.
Thanks!
Giovanni

That's GREAT news Giovanni.

I don't think I can help with this lyric - I heard is as "Take a look at my new toy, it will blow your head into a void." At the time I first heard it (1979? maybe - large bombs were worrying for an 11 year old kid) that made sense.
"You can't always do right, but you can always do what's left."

Same for me. But I agree that the lyric ( "blow your head in two" ) is intended to mean "blow your mind".

I have merrily been singing this as "will blow your head into a ball" until I looked at it yesterday

its: "It'll blow your head in two, oh boy"

This is a psycho killer song because his girl has done him wrong and you've just come in on him shining his double barrel shotgun ...... take a look at my new toy .......... then there is those chimes ...... time is a waiting get the fuck out of there

Wooow! So great you are working on writing a book about THE POLICE and Sting... I hope someday I could do the same in spanish, I consider myself having good skills on writing. I don't know to have the better sources to help you, you know here exist great POLICE/STING investigators like Craig, Sebastien and others. Anyway, the best wishes for the succeeding of that book. 8)

Ooooooh, a new book! I'm so excited for you, Gio. Fortunately for you, my Italian sucks, and you won't have to put up with me commenting on grammar and punctuation the way Stewart had to. Fortunately for me, my Italian is passable enough that I'll be able to thoroughly enjoy the book.
Regarding the lyrics, until Tourzilla, I thought the line was "it'll blow your head into a boy(or perhaps buoy)", which completely confounded me. Since understanding the lyrics, I have assumed that the toy was a gun along the same lines as English Lion. However, your gentler interpretation of the toy being the truth works for me too, and it's a whole lot less unsettling.

Oo-oo, oo-oo, this so cool, Gio! I don't have Italian, I took Latin so can fuddle my way through a bit of Italian (the 'old' bits no doubt  ).
Here's my 2 cents worth on this particular lyric: for once I did actually hear the right words ( I have really sung some doozies at church, due to a hearing issue), and heard truth as something which seeks a target like, well, a bullet or a missile, etc,. In this case, the truth of what was really going on in the relationship of the song, and how that has struck the singer who is seeking another target in reaction. The Truth will set you free-but it may not just ONLY make you miserable it could blow your mind (literally and figuratively) on its way home.
Giovanni, PLEASE be sure to post an image of the cover when this is all done. Fantastic!

Congratulations, Giovanni!

You can count on me. I actually speak italian since I lived in Rome for 2 years when I was a kid. My dad was a diplomat at the Brazilian Embassy at Piazza Novona.

'TAKE A LOOK AT MY NEW TOY, IT WILL BLOW YOUR HEAD IN TWO, OH BOY!"

That's what I hear and this line always made me think of a gun. As if he lost his temper and the hell with the truth, I just may shoot you. Of course, it is probably something else, but I just wanted to throw one more idea into the mix.

Good luck, Gio!

Curiosity...Here is song from the Brazilian trio "Paralamas do sucesso" the tropical "Police" if you may. This is is called "Oculos" and shares mostly the same harmony as "Truth hits everybody". The drumline (any silimarity wth Stewart?) is based on "Bed's too big..." and the drumset is a carbon copy of Stewart's Tama.

I thought it could be a funny info, Gio.

Totally awesome news Gio! I don't know what help I'll be but I'll let you know. Good luck.

I hate to say it, but the first version of Truth Hits on Tourzilla was pretty lackluster considering what a banging tune it is. It improved along the way.
Stewart and Stanley together again!! YO!
