Got my tickets for Twickenham this morning.

Who else is going? Is there a local pub to meet up beforehand?

There are a couple of pubs right by the station so we could pick one of those for a meeting point. The Cabbage Patch is probably the best one and it's got a garden so we can sit outside if the weather is good. I can't quite believe i am having this conversation... The POLICE are playing in Twickenham! FLIPPIN' HECK! I wish I could go back and tell my 11 year old self about this, I really do! She'd be over the moon!

As I expect you know, it's a rugby stadium, but I've never seen a band play there so I'm as in the dark as you guys I'm afraid. But the stadium is nice and near the station and Twickenham is a lovely place to hang out both pre and post-gig. Although I am a little biased of course!

Don't think there's that many (british) southerners on this forum! But I'm sure we'll hear from a few more in due course. I'll check on TPT as well. But hey - if it's just the three of us we can get to know each other thoroughly over a pint or 2!

Are there as distinct differences between northern English and southern English as there is in the US between US northerners and US southerners?

Oddly enough in the band, you have Sting from the north and Andy from the south.

Not quite as marked as America, but there's a friendly rivalry for sure.
We mostly just take the mickey out of each other by way of stereotypes! I've mostly felt rather exluded from those arguments as I come from the south west of england which has stereotypes all of its own (we are simple country folk down there

but now I live in London I qualify as a proper soft southerner!

The stereotypes run something like this:
North: coal mining, whippets, pigeon fancying, flat caps, ale, up for a fight.
South: money-obsessed, rude, pretentious, inability to hold one's drink.

Anyone care to add to my horrible list?!

There are also positive aspects to both stereotypes as well I hasten to add! Northerners are famous for being very friendly for example.

PS. This is all meant in good humour so please don't anyone get offended! Feel free to mock me for being a tractor-driving-yokel

I used to work for a company where I would have to call Europe every day...usually the UK.

I was always subconscious about my Texas accent

So, I would try my hardest to speak the King's English and sound like I knew how to speak proper English.

One time, I was calling a lady in an AP department at a company and they told me..."she is on holiday for a fortnight". I had to stop and think for a moment and translate that to American.

Oh, she is on vacationn for two weeks! got it!

When I was in the UK a few years ago, If I needed to ask someone a question, I would jokingly say.. "do you speak American?" which usually got a laugh.

So, going forward, I will try to speak like the news presenters on the BBC World Service
