I wonder if this is what they already are planning to play on tour, or if it was just a preliminary list to jam on. This must be Andy's stand, because the book open to Rehumanize Yourself is guitar tab. Just to give a general opinion, maybe from a slightly younger POV than the band or some of the people here...

One World -- very drippy hippie sentiment, pretty mediocre song
Shadows in the Rain -- OK song, but one I don't think anybody would feel too deprived not hearing

SONGS I WISH THEY WOULDN'T PLAY:

Walking in Your Footsteps -- I know some people can see no wrong in any of their songs, but this one is extremely cheesy, both lyrically and musically--I cannot stress strongly enough how merely using the word "Brontosaurus" automatically ruins your image as a rock band
Tea in the Sahara -- not as bad, but it's a song that starts out slow and quiet and stays that way, and the lyrics make no sense--maybe somebody can explain them to me--sounds like Sting solo material, not the Police
Murder By Numbers -- lounge music. weak lyrics. nothing more to be said. they don't need to play the entire Snychronicity album--if they're going to, I'd rather hear Synchronicity I.


SONGS I THINK THEY OUGHT TO PLAY:

Instead of some of the ones in the last two groups--

Omegaman -- Good up-tempo song, Andy's best-written
Man in a Suitcase -- their one pure ska song, people would be up and jumping for it
Truth Hits Everybody -- one of their best early rock songs
No Time This Time -- awesome song, maybe hard for them to pull off live at their age... Would be a perfect closer.
Darkness -- Stewart's best song, one of my favorite Police songs -- maybe not an ideal live song, but it's a better "slow" song than some of the ones above.


Replace Walking, Tea, Murder, One World, and either Synch II or Invisible Sun with those, and I'd call it close to perfect. Just my opinion, though.

I totally disagree with you regarding walking in your footsteps!!
I saw them play it live at Wembley Arena and it was absolutlely amazing specially the percussion!
Maybe not the best lyrics ever but hey!!...

Wait and See - Man, it would be hard to disagree more with some of your assessments. As with your post these are just opinions and of course no one can be right with something as subjective as music. With that in mind...

First, I totally agree with all of your "ought to's." All of those would be great. And a few of those are my favorites.

On to the marginals: Synch II is a great song - it's about parallel worlds (hence the bottom of a dark Scottish lake) and Andy's feedback solo in the middle is amazing. Invisible Sun is a fantastic song (if you're going to complain about slow songs then what about Wrapped Around Your Finger and the like?) - another chance to showcase Andy as well. One World is some (if not THE) best Stewart drumming on a Police song. Shadows is a song with a lot of space where they can freelance and jam and mess with tempo, etc. - probably why it's there.

On to the ones you hate: Put some headphones on and crank up Footsteps and Tea in the Sahara - awesome guitar effects and percussion. BTW you need to read Paul Bowles The Sheltering Sky to understand what Tea is about. I think you're missing the point on Murder - it's hilarious. The funniest song the Police do in my opinon - and listen to the polyrhythms Stew belts out on that song.

Okay, sorry for the rant....just had to get some opinions out. And just like everyone else I'd like to see some of the other b-sides and lesser known songs but when you think about the numbers of people paying to see them I imagine most of them want "the hits." I think they'll throw us diehards a bone or two but not much more than that. Obviously, I'm just happy this is all happening...

Synch II is OK musically, but I don't like the lyrics. It's not a bad song, but there are many others I'd rather hear if I had to choose.

I like Invisible Sun and Shadows in the Rain, I just think they could be "expendable" in favor of some others.

One World is not a great song from a writing standpoint. It's basically just a vamp on one chord, without much of a melody. I've heard a lot of drummers praise Stewart's playing on it, so I'll take their word for it even though I don't totally hear it. That's what I get for being a guitar player I guess.

As for the three from Synchronicity that I think they should avoid...I find all three of them boring musically and lyrically. Even more so, those three are songs that I think have aged very poorly, and may leave all but the hardcore fans looking at their watch...

Basically, I think they ought to jettison those songs for ones that are faster rock/reggae tunes from the earlier albums. If they want to re-conquer the world and gain new fans in the younger demographics, as a general rule I think they should stick to rocking out and avoid the half-baked philosophy and lounge music...

With the slower songs, I guess I draw the line based on the sound. Some of them, like Wrapped Around Your Finger (which actually is not that slow once you get to the choruses and the ending), Darkness, and Shadows in the Rain resemble certain types of "electronica" and hip hop that are still current. The minimalist, atmospheric drum-and-bass type stuff still works, and is a big part of what made them cool as a band. It's the stuff that was more in line with where Sting headed on his solo material that I think will be considered cheesy and maybe even laughable to some, especially younger listeners who might give them a try based on all the hype.

I know it sounds like I'm trashing some of the music, but this is purely constructive criticism. I want to see them succeed. I hope they do a new album, too.

Personally, I would pay to see these three guys on stage playing chess.
I will not be disappointed with anything I hear. Just the fact that this is happening at all feels like a gift.

That said, I am sure that THE set list for the concerts will look radically different from what is written on that page. I am sure those songs were played throug a few times and I wouldn;t be shocked if most of them are either re-thought or discarded completely depending on how they sounded. If something wasn't working, I am sure the band will decide if it is worth the effort or simply move on. I am sure that there will be songs played on tour that were not posted on that list. I mean, they played 'When the World..." at the announcement and I don;t even think that song was on the set list for Vancouver.

All a work in progress...


Oh, and by the way, I hope they dig out "Secret Journey"!

I agree with everyone on here that one world is a boring song and should definitely not be on the set list.

I want more songs from zenyatta as this is my favourite album. Obviously if zenyatta is my favourite album then my preference is for the first three albums. But i do like songs from the last two as well, like spirits.

I'd LOVE to hear One World. But maybe it is a drummer thing...that's one of my favorite songs to hear Stewart play in the Ghost and Synchronicity live shows...

I Love One World. Always did. Glad it's on the setlist. Back when the Police were a band this song was always a fan favorite. The lyrics, the groove, the Stewart. It's all there. Can't wait to hear it live again.

Shadows in the Rain (if played anything remotely like it was on the Around the World vid) would be a nice gift to the fans too.

'Voices' is not written on the list but I'm sure the've been rehearsing it as the intro for 'World' and will remain like that for the tour. 'Reggatta' isn't on the list either and it's always been part of 'Losing You'

It was great to see is a set list very close to one I post here a month before ( don't forget "World is runing down" and "Can't stand" will be mixed with "Voices" and the second one with "Regatta")... perhaps could be nice to plays one "Stewart" song, don't forget "Murder by numbers" is Andy's music and Sting lyrics... Cool see "Rehumanize yourself" at the book open close to the set list... and imagine THE POLICE in Paris performed "Fall Out" as a quartet!!! Guess who could be the the guest musician? .... Henry Padovani... Isn't an insane idea... all is possible

By the way I love "O my God/De do do do" and "One World" ( I like what the lyrics try to say to the whole world into a dance rythm I love the guitar and drums), perhaps "Too Much Information" will works perfect to mix another song... I turn really crazy with the amazing guitar introduction of this song..finally I don't want to categorisize any POLICE songs... all their songs are perfect for me!
