Favorite Sting Bass

Favorite Sting Bass

Postby drummike on 02 Oct 2010 18:37

Following in the same vein as the Favorite Copeland Kit thread, what's your favorite bass as played by Mr. Sting? This includes the various fretted or fretless models, and can include videos as well as albums and live gigs.

Choices could include the red Fender Precision, the blonde Fender Jazz, any of the Ibanez Musician models, the red Hamer from the De Do do do video, the Steinberger, the white Spector, the vintage Fender Precision, the string bass from the Every Breath video, or the Van Zalinge electric upright bass.

I personally don't have a favorite, but I can say that I'm usually in awe of whatever fretless he uses for Walking On the Moon in concert, as well as Shadows In the Rain.

I'm not sure if there's any reason to do a Favorite Andy Summers Guitar thread, since the only one I think of when I think of Andy is the sunburst Telecaster. The Hamers and Rolands, etc. are great, but that Telecaster is just awesome. Well, the red Strat is pretty awesome, too, but the Tele is supreme.

Let's talk bass...

So far, Brian leads with one vote.

Was the white Spector just the wrong color? Sound bad to you? Too something?

Fender precision 1951 is it ? Love it.

I have the Fender Sting replica and it sounds so nice. I could only imagine how nice that vintage would be.

I like the warmer bass vibe, reggae style.

I disliked the sound of that white (Danzig LOL !) thing too.

but that custom elec standup (Brian) sounds way wicked on Shadows in Police around the World.

...like a nice old worn in Slingerland kit.

Cheers. BB

Wasn't Brian that stripped down, god-ugly thing Sting used in the studio during the GITM period?
If so, that DEF gets my vote.

Least fav is the white Synch tour bass. Too 80s and very dated.

I keep reading this thread and thinking " I don't really know enough to comment", but Bryan (Brian? do we really know how he spelled it?), now him I know. Although, I think my fav would still be the Vintage Fender, that dirty ol' thing. I actually do know alot about Fender Basses, except I still can't keep my Precisions vs. my Jazzes straight (luddite lady, please us out with pluralization of these various instruments!)

if he used the white spector for the Synch Rehearsals then i'd have to say I love the sound of it, esp pumping away during Synch I/II.. and i remember a moddy shot in Danny Q's book with Gordo leaning against his amps with a greeen scarf and jacket on that it looked pretty good at the time to this young boys eyes.

didn't like the headless rectangle thing he had in 82-ish, usually accompanied by that horrible yellow jacket, ear-ring and coke habit.

I liked the look of a dark wood bass he had which had a rhino sticker on it, he was wearing a long, trench coat length jacket with straight dark hair, dont know what it sounded like or what make it was, had it on my wall as a kiddo from maybe 1981 calendar or something.

the blonde Fender Jazz is nice though, if only cos i associate it with the early gigs and a (apparently) smelly flight suit.

Any of the Fenders he played get my top vote. Also Brian, because he made it cool to play an upright on a rock gig.

Least favorites--the Steinberger and the Spector. They both sound like ass, then and now.

I agree that the Fenders and the Ibanez basses sounded awesome. At Rupp Arena 1982, he shook the room with the Steinberger, but that was probably from the massive p.a. and his huge amp rig.
