I haven't had a chance to start reading it yet, but I'm very anxious to dive into "Rock & Roll Jihad", a kind of memoir by Salman Ahmad. He and his band Junoon are hugely popular rockers in Pakistan who strive to fight extremism through their music which blends rock with sufism, a mystic branch of Islam. That hasn't always been easy for them. Aside from being a musician, he is a UN good will ambassador and a lecturer at Queen's College in New York. I've heard a couple of interviews with him, and he's fascinating and ridiculously articulate about all manner of things. Based on the little bits I've heard, his music is way cool, too, with rhythms that are sure to please us Copeland fans.
If the title scares you, just remember that for most Muslims, jihad means an internal spiritual struggle on an individual and personal level. They view the extremists' take on the word as a corruption even though it is the only understanding most Westerners have of it.
