Agreed. That looks like a still from the Top of the Pops performance and I remember that was definitely not a splash. Don't think Stewart had them at the time.

splash cymbals can be up to 22" diameter. depends on the manufacturer.

Old Grey Whistle--you are correct. Had the show wrong, but I do remember that it was the one where Sting sprayed hairspray into his eyes.

Didn't Stewart only play small splash cymbals? Believe wikipedia if you like, but Stewart's wiki lists his pre-reunion and reunion kit setups:

my friend, the overall point is that stewart is more than capable to use a crash cymbal as a splash cymbal.

and btw, a splash cymbal can be up to 22"

Jack,

I understand that there can be 22" splash cymbals, but I really don't think Stewart had any--especially in this video-- when he did add splashes to his kit he only used small ones.

Not sure where you're thinking he is using a crash as a splash in this video. Sounds like a crash to me, no matter where he's placing the hits.

Also, drummer friends of mine would argue that a 22" splash is really more of a medium thin crash cymbal.

To me, a splash (and Stewart's use of it) is more applicable here:

by this time he had added splashes to hit kit, along with the octobans.

either way Zildjian and Paiste never made a 22" splash cymbal in the 70's as far as I know.. But yea, it is prolly Zildjian

Yes I think it's a Zildjan too. Paiste cymbals look different, and I once saw a picture from the Reggatta or Zenyatta Tour showing that he used Zildjans.

I also defer to Mike. Stewart used mostly Zildjian until his Paiste deal became official in March of '80 or '81.
