Hi all, I saw this from TPT posted by Michelle and I just listened to it. Will post the link in the link section but wanted to note it here to, if that's ok.
It was an over-the-phone interview and Stewart talks a bit about the phone call etc., his fave option for the poll about vocals (doo-wop babes! HAH!)...singing lesson... and is really funny, overall! He's in the South Bay for the San Jose award thingy...

Scroll down to "What did you miss on the KFOG Morning Show?" and in that section I had to right click on "Copeland talked to KFOG" and open in a separate window to get it to load properly, its an audio (of course!) clip...It's a great Stewart fix, surely!!!

That is TOOOO bizarre!
My very first exposure to music that had an impact on me was the "Hatari" soundtrack that Stewart mentions in this interview.
I remember hearing the african inspired drums and just going "wow...this music is cool"! I actually went looking to see if it was still available a while back, and this is all I could find:

I can't find the page with audio samples, but if anyone likes great movie music with excellent tribal drums and polyrhythms, they should definitely check this out.
This might explain why Stewart's approach to drumming appeals to me so much.

I see it as a nod to the I-Threes, the three female backup singers that became an integral part of Bob Marley and the Wailers after the original trio broke up. Of course, the original group *was* a mostly all-male effort except for their very earliest recordings, but by the time Bob conquered the world, the ladies were firmly in place. And it was during that era that the Police were founded.
Sting once described the Police sound as "locking reggae with pop", and Stewart has many times told the story about how he was really into Bob and shared some of his records with Sting in the very earliest days of the band. Stewart even referenced him at the Whiskey, saying all their songs sound like Bob Marley. While *that's* a bit of a stretch, it remains clear that if the Wailers hadn't exploded like they did in the 70's, the Police would have been a very different band. Their influence is not to be underestimated.
Hey, blueboy thanks for the recommendation. Tribal drums and polyrhythms are pretty much *exactly* where my current tastes are now, as the Rhythmatist is still the single biggest influence on me musically. I just picked up my first King Sunny Ade disc, based totally on a review. I've never heard the music before, so time to go give it a spin!

Singing lessons...sweet. They don't have to be able to hit notes like Sting, they just need to come up with harmonies that fit in their range, stay on key, blend in, and let Sting do the heavy lifting.
IMHO, samples should be at the bottom of the list, below "no background vocals at all". I think a lot of people will dock them credit if they use them..."yeah they were good, but...they used pre-recorded audio". I think they can pull it off.

I am so not surprised...Stewart started this band, and it's only right that he'd be the one to start it up again...
although he claims he hadn't been thinking about it, and I'm remembering interviews for ES:TPIO in which he talked about being nostalgic for the old days...he's probably talking about pre-ES:TPIO...
love for 'Children of Men', which makes sense...wonder what he thought of 'The Departed'...
