What's the deal about URGH! A Music War?

Postby luddite lady on 18 Apr 2010 04:26

I've never seen it. I know The Police appear in it. I just read an on-line article about it in which Stewart is credited as the producer. I've never heard this before and, when I checked on The Police wiki, it doesn't look like Dietmar, sockii and the gang have heard this either. So, is there any connection between this film and Stewart beside The Police's appearance?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0138902/fullcredits

if it's not on the wiki yet, then it's because there's too much to do to have everything included by now
especially WHEN NO ONE CONTRIBUTES ! ! ! ! !

Yep, hasn't been gotten to yet.

I just added templates to the pages so folks can more easily fill in the blanks:

Film: http://www.policefans.org/Police_wiki/i ... %28film%29

Soundtrack: http://www.policefans.org/Police_wiki/i ... ndtrack%29

LL, I'm way behind on mailing stuff, but when I get the chance, I can send you a copy. Just send me an email in case I forget. Do a search on YouTube, and somewhere in there you should find a video of Stewart talking about the making of the film.

ETA: To nix earlier offer.

This is a must see. Fan-fucking-tastic version of Driven to Tears (I'm pretty sure this is the same version contained in Message in a Box). Filmed at Frejus.
There is no bigger gong.

Thanks guys. I just want to clarify what I meant when I said you wiki-folk hadn't heard of "this". I meant the idea of Stewart being the producer. As Everyone Stares is the only film the wiki credits Stewart as producing, I was a little suspect about this other article's accuracy. Thanks Dietmar for clearing it up and the others for giving me all the other info. When I get a chance I'll look through the other links. I'll take you up on your kind offer, DM, but I'll e-mail you about it sometime when we both aren't so waaaaay busy.

ETA: Offer? There ain't no offers here!

talking of which: a lovely looking restored Driven to Tears from Urgh! nice foolin' around bits before the song and lots of stew filming and drumming:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJK-fXBeJkQ&feature=fvw

The Police 1980 Live From Restored 16mm Original Print Frejus gig.

The poster talks about his access to the whole gig and lots of other police footage:

"This clip is from a 16 mm music film archive that I have some access to, there is a lot of Police stuff. As I am a fan from way back & run my own production company(Nyquest Limited) I thought it would be good to telecine some of it & clean it up/sweeten audio & colour correct"

have you got more? someone asks:
"There is hours of unseen footage including Australia 1980 South America, Glasgow 1979, Hammersmith 1979, 3 tracks from 1977 "Sting goes to the doctors"
"Sting Looses I out takes from "Police Around The World"
Alternate videos from Derrick Burbidge etc etc.
I wish I could load it up but I am unable due to contractual reasons. This is up cos its commercially available on the Urgh VHS release.
Sorry. If this changes I will post something."

and for those just joining us: It's not out on an official DVD release b/c there's a lot of red tape involved getting permissions from all the bands. Tho it is on TV fairly regularly - although I see DM has already volunteered, which is both very kind and not at all surprising. :)

Don't get me started on that Nyquest clip "tease" for the DtT restoration. Almost better to have NOT put that up, actually. :x

And yeah, the WB cover totally bites.

No problem. Consider the offer nixed. I missed the orginal thread here about the WB release. But the article that got me asking questions in the first place was actually a review of the Warner Brothers' DVD. Somehow I forgot that. Now I'm off to retreive my brain.

Ha! Me too. Although I see I even posted in that thread. Oh well.

Think I remember reading Krok's very well-reasoned argument why the thing sucks...and also I have about three copies of the bootleg mailed to me by different folks, all of which are pretty good.

I ordered a copy of the URGH! DVD and I think it's pretty damn good!
The picture doesn't look like anything you're used to see in these HD/Bluray times, but it's definitely better than the DVD copy I had. Better colours and whatnot.
It's presented in 1,85:1 here which means that bits from the top and bottom have been cut off.
But that might actually have been the case for the cinema release back in 1981, too.
Still: what's on the screen looks very good!!
The only "menu" that's there let's you choose between watching the movie and its trailer (which is - after all - a bonus!).
There's no track selection, but you can skip forward in 10 minute intervals.

Good enough for me. It's definitely very watchable even on a HD flatscreen TV.
