Tribute to the Hi Hat

Tribute to the Hi Hat

Postby TheEqualizer on 26 Feb 2010 06:58

What really got me hooked on STEWART? His hi hat. ELTSDIM, particularly. God I love it. I have Red Rain on my iPod just so I can listen to the first 10 seconds of it with SC's tasty hi hat work once and a while for a quick fix.

Anyway, I just thought I would post some other great hi hat stuff:

Max Roach:

Buddy Rich:

Steve Smith:

Jojo Mayer:

God I love the hi hat, and I guess that's why I love STEWART. In my book, he's better than all of the above, cuz he's got more soul and is not just technique.

You've neglected Papa Jo Jones (Count Basie), who pretty much invented all those hi-hat tricks, not to mention Chick Webb, for whom the hi-hat was invented.

I've always considered Stewart to be the "Papa Jo of Rock", not only because of his prowess on the hats, but also because of his impeccable feel.

I did not mean to slight anyone by not failing to mention them. I simply was posting youtube clips that I quickly came across as I was falling asleep last night.

Little known EQ fact. I tell everyone that the Police was the first concert I ever went to, but technically, the first concert I ever went to was the Count Basie Orchestra shortly before his unfortunate death.

Hats off to the hats, for sure!
Jojo Mayer is unfuckingbelievable.
I have his instructional DVD "Secret weapons for the modern drummer". Highly recommended.

If you can't play hi-hat like a drum go back to school and learn how...very important!!!!

Players who use hi-hat like a drum...

Stewart Copeland
Vinnie Colaiuta
Manu Katche
Dennis Chambers
Bill Bruford
Chad Wackerman
Terry Bozzio
Brian Blade

and others....
and if sometimes i can't seem to talk you know this blackborad lacks a piece of chalk

Thanks EQ!!

Can't wait to watch that Max Roach link. I've heard he used to do this whole seminar on the hat when he was teaching at UMass. Sorry to have missed that....

This is a most timely thread.
Yesterday, I bought the first piece of real drum hardware I've ever really owned. (My Rolands don't count.) Oh yeah, I do own a real kick pedal (Pearl) and some sticks, though. And a Roc'n'Soc. That's it though. :)

I wanted my first purchase, the beginning of my own real set, to be hi-hats, on account of Stewart.
(However, I'm still waiting for Stewart's Signature Hats. Do these exist?)
For now, I use loaners for Jam Class.

But when I can get those hats, now they'll have something to sit on.

My first piece of drum gear, to which I will definitely toast some tequila when it arrives:
A DW 9550 Hi Hat Stand!
http://www.musicplayers.com/reviews/dru ... Whihat.php

I bought this stupidly expensive Hi Hat Stand because it will allow me to position the hats in the middle.
(I'm cheating. No crossing over sticks for me!)

I wanted the hi hats in the middle ever since I read this:
http://www.drummercafe.com/education/le ... ement.html

So I experimented with having the Hi Hat in the 12 O'Clock position on my rolands and LOVED it.
After a few weeks of not being able to reproduce that muscle memory in Jam Class, I was sold and found this:

I almost bought that deal. It looks well made and cool, but I thought the DW Universal Linkage design was better. And I figured, well, I hope I'll every only buy one Hi Hat stand, so getting one that has this ability was worth it.

I am very excited to try this thing this week.

I'm also still waiting. Probably forever, too.
I believe only prototypes exist. The ones with the Rhythmatist logo on SC'c Tourzilla kit. Paiste was going to produce them, but for some reason didn't and pulled out. They should have been released during Tourzilla. I was hoping to get those with the sig kit, but got one of the closest matches; 12" Twentys.

I was wondering when someone would mention him! The guy comes up with the coolest patterns. I was listening to their debut album just the other day.

My fave's from BC: The Crossing, Steeltown and Peace in Our Time.

Totally amazing underrated drummer.

I don't know if this will be helpful at all, but a forum discussion elsewhere: "What Superior hi hat would be best for Stewart Copeland type playing?"
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.
