I'm looking forward to this... I liked him with Gil Evans Orchestra, so there is a decent chance that I will enjoy this too.
Why, hello there.

Although I've come to expect it, I still feel a moderate degree of outrage that tp.com would send me an e-mail about a Sting tour. Sting does not equal The Police. If they aren't going to keep me up to date on all three members of the band, they shouldn't be flogging Sting solo stuff.

And Sting can destroy his post-Police stuff all he wants, but can't somebody please make them keep their fucking orchestral hands off of the likes of Next To You?

I would go to this and pay big money too if I could be promised that Stewart would be there in the front row screaming the whole time, "We're a fucking rock band!"
In Dallas, the only game that really mattered was in the word gamelan.

It really fucking burns me to no end that "PoliceHQ" keeps spamming me with announcements about, well, practically every time Sting takes a shit but they can never be bothered to post announcements about what Stewart or Andy is up to. (OK, they didn't post an announcement about Sting playing a private concert for a dictator's daughter...hmmm....wonder why...)

Here's the sad truth:
No one can stop him.

Once you publish a song, anyone can 'cover' it. There's not even a legal means. Given that Sting is the songwriter credited on NTY, it's practically impossible. (It would be hilarious if Stewart filed an injunction in California Court, though. Just to see it in print.)

I pretty much said my bit over on TPT, but one thing I'll add here.

Sting has a major brand problem, and now his team knows it. He's been trying, for 25 years, to out-do the Police. To have the Sting band be bigger than the Police brand.

But it has never happened.
The Police Tour, I think, created a price point problem, from a brand point of view.

Sting can't go out now and charge LESS than Tourzilla pricing, because then, the message is clear:
Sting is worth less than The Police.

And that will NEVER fly for Stingo.
Doing these intimate evenings Symphonic things is a way of blurring the price point line while they figure out how to 'position' him.
But that's only gonna not work for so long, and then Sting is going to need to pay the balloon payment on the The Magic Stingdom.

Ironically, what Sting HAS to do, if he wants to kill the Police brand, is trot out a couple more Tourzillas. Satisfy the appetites, and kill the myth. Play more of his wimpy impression of a great rock band, and people will forget what a great rock band they were.

Maybe he could - gasp! horrors - write some new Police material. Yeah, I know it'd be a pale imitation, since he wouldn't let the other two have input, but it'd solve his problem.

+1 on being appalled at the Uzbekistan thing. I mean, saying you're a cultural envoy from the world of ideas is one thing, but taking a million dollars in blood money from this regime is another. WTF?!

This is VERY disheartening. It just makes me feel like his participation in the Amnesty Conspiracy of Hope tour was "compleat bullshit."

I read a tiny article about this yesterday entitled "Sting in hot water" but hadn't seen the whole story until now. I really hope that this is one of those things that the papers have got wrong.

I know Sting talks about liking to surprise people but if he really did do this concert then it's a pretty nasty surprise for a lot of people.

I really really hope this isn't true.

This is the same hypocrite who claims he's so environmental, then leaves a huge carbon footprint between him, his family and his entourage. That, of course, was discussed in a previous post.

The Sting concert itself was a charity event. All of the funds raised from ticket sales will be directed to charity and social activities of the Fund Forum along with its grant and scholarship programmes. More than half of the tickets were reserved free for Fund's youth projects participants, young professionals, activists and volunteers along with Uzbekistan prominent arts and culture figures and accredited media.

I'm hoping that I can make it to his concert open in Vancouver :-) and damn it, there better be a bass clarinet!!! :P
