Preferences on Stewart drumming vs. composing

Preferences on Stewart drumming vs. composing

Postby njperry on 18 Feb 2010 17:46

Amy's comment on another thread caused me to ponder something.

Stewart really is primarily a composer rather than a drummer now.

Would you prefer to hear him drum on someone else's music (not counting drumming for the Police) or would you prefer to his music performed by someone else?

Personally, I love to hear his songs, regardless of who plays them far more than hearing his drumming on someone else's CD, but many probably prefer the drumming.

I find I will purchase a CD with a song of his on it, but don't go out to get CDs in which he plays.

However, I might go the other way if it involved seeing Stewart drum on someone else's work as opposed to hearing a live performance of his work.

What to others think? Either way you are complimenting Stewart.
SC-There are a few crazy people on this planet. Sure sign of that is that they kinda like my music

Well if I may...I too work in production being versatile is where it is at. Even though, I love the man's drumming I also truly appreciate his musical compositions.

I had to shuck "drummer title" as well...now in my field I am considered "musician" and that suits me just fine. If you have the gift of composing then drummers by all means stretch your boundaries ...I am sure Stewart would approve.
and if sometimes i can't seem to talk you know this blackborad lacks a piece of chalk

Tough call. Though I love the visceral thrill of seeing him drumming, I miss hearing new music from him when it's not regularly coming. I just find myself seriously pining for hearing more of his compositional stuff professionally *recorded* and made available to those of us who can't always travel the world or country to hear a new piece performed only once... (be it performed by Stewart or "just" composed...!)

Wouldn't it be cool to see him perform on something he composed?

I'd gladly take a heaping helping of either flavour of Stewartness. That said, my preference is to watch Stewart drumming pretty much anything. I just love Stewart playing "Watching the Detectives" on EC's Spectacle. And one of my most memorable moments of the dying days of Tourzilla was seeing him playing Sunshine and Purple Haze at JB2 and MSG. The video of the Taranta stuff from last summer was amazing too. That is something I would love to see live.
In Dallas, the only game that really mattered was in the word gamelan.
