OT: WHAT'S IT DOING OUTSIDE??

So tell us how you REALLY feel, vespa :P

Seriously, my rant as a city dweller is against people who don't fucking shovel their sidewalks. FOR TWO FUCKING WHOLE DAYS AFTER A STORM. Or think that shoveling out a foot-wide path you can sort of walk through is ok - screw anyone with a cart, wheelchair, or other wheeled vehicle of some kind to navigate along the path. (FWIW, Philly guidelines state you must clear at least a 30" path on your sidewalks after a storm.)

I'm exhausted after a simple shopping trip today down 4-blocks of poorly-shoveled out sidewalks. I was forced after a while to fight with the cars and use the main street on some blocks as the shoveling was so poorly done. I have a HUGE swath of sidewalk, owning a corner property, that I was out about 5-6 times over the weekend shoveling out! But I got it fucking done! And then clearing off the street drains and the bus paths next to my building after the city street plows were through and blocked them off. Yet a lot of my neighbors didn't seem to give a fuck.

I hope the city government is serious about leveling fines against property owners who didn't shovel out after this storm, because it really DOES create a safety hazard for every one else.

Arse over elbow on the ice again! Even big dog fell over. Oh well it is January and at least I don't have to shovel snow...... yet. Stay safe everyone and don't break anything important!

The wind would knock you over here today (Virginia). And it was 21 degrees this morning. No snow (yet. It's only January 3.)

The weather prognosticators are starting to tease us that their computer models hinting about another coastal storm forming on the east coast sometime thurs night/fri morning.

It's COLD here in Savannah. And being on the coast, cuts right through ya. 20's all week, highs in low 40's until sometime next week. Heard it may even snow sometime this weekend, and if it does, it'll stick cause the ground's so cold. The whole city will shut down for snow. Quite a rarity.

Thank goodness still snowing! I LOVE the cold and the snow! Only thing more better would be if I were in Highland County or Amherst County VA. Or in Pendleton Co. WVa, at Seneca Rocks....that is the way to spend a few snowy days, even up on Dolly Sods, beautiful....

A few inches of snow and much of England has come to a standstill. Roads closed, public transport halted, people stranded for hours in broken down cars, power cables down etc. As a country we just don't seem equipped to cope with it. On the other hand what the British do cope with is everyone helping each other when it all goes T*** up. There are loads of stories on the radio of people being helped by strangers when they find themselves stuck in the snow or without power or water. Myself, I'm very grateful today to the local farmer who despite having a gazillion of his own animals to see to, has hauled hay, water and feed to my two elderly horses when I couldn't get my car up the hill out of the village to see to them at their yard 12 miles away, and the various neighbours who have offered me the use of a hot bath or shower or a cup of coffee because my water supply has died due to a burst water pipe in the empty property next door.

It's funny but the snow seemed much deeper here in the seventies and yet it never seemed to stop anyone getting out and about. Or maybe it's just that it seemed deeper because I was 6 or 7 years old and so much shorter and didn't have work or horses to worry about and no water was a damned good excuse not to have a bath!

we have hardly any snow in my part of the UK and I was feling a little envious I must admit until I read your post Moonstone, what amazing neighbours you have :)

very cold here and lots of icy patches, but everyone here is currently managing to get around pretty much as normal.

More snow forecast for the next 5 days though

I do have amazing neighbours! I'm so lucky.

If it come your way HalcyonLisa and you have to walk about in the snow and ice then steal the biggest, thickest pair of socks that you can find off of your husband, boyfriend, brother (or someone elses husband/boyfriend/brother) or even off the nearest washing line, and put them on over the top of your boots.

Saves you from slipping up on your arse on the pavement.

getting ready for another day off.... i work for Youth Justice supervising young people on court orders (blah blah blah) so fairly quickly the Home Office / my managers make the decision to cancel appointments 'cos we have to be very organised in recording visits and missed ones when the Oiks don't turn up..... i got a call at 4.30 saying that tomorrow is off.....

we've got about 6 inches, i guess, started last night in earnest and continued with varying heaviness all day.. is about -2 during the day, not that i know 'cos i was painting the bathroom all day .... and it's all turning to black ice as i speak... very exciting / unpredictable driving conditions....

What is it about that? I think the same thing. It's like bike helmets and baby seats in cars. We did just fine BACK THEN (only for me it was the 60s.)

Anybody up for a snowball fight?

It's time to resurrect this thread. So far here (Virginia): nothing. 32 degrees, but IT'S COMING!

Yes, it is. We're up to three or four inches here and it's been snowing since 9 this morning. I have a few photos but nothing really outstanding yet...will wait till tomorrow AM, since it's supposed to snow all night. Yowza.

This just does not happen around here and I'm not looking forward to hearing a lot of yammer out of the global warming deniers this week. Blah.
