Stewart's Known Upcoming Projects

Postby njperry on 06 Jan 2010 15:00

Updated to add information on Stewart’s Tyrant’s Crush, Ben Hur performances, and upcoming dates for the Chamber Music program with Jon Kimura Parker. Also updated to remove things that have already happened.

Please let me know if I missed something that others know about.

1. “Off the Score” chamber music program with Jon Kimura Parker, 2 announced performances so far in 2016

A program of chamber music with Stewart and pianist Jon Kimura Parker. The shows to date have included Stewart compositions such as Birds of Prey, Celeste, and Darkness, as well as classical works. There were 6 shows in 2015 and 5 so far announced for 2016

The known upcoming performances are:

March 31, 2016, at the Carolina Theatre of Durham in Durham, North Carolina.

April 2, 2016 at the Germantown Performing Arts Center in Germantown, Tennessee.

April 5, 2016 at Dominion-Chalmers United Church, Ottawa, Canada as part of the Ottawa Chamberfest

April 7, 2016 at the Massry Center for the Arts on the campus of Saint Rose College in Albany, NY

4/8 Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts, New York, New York. One website also listed April 9 but that seems not to be happening now.

2. Stewart performing new composition Tyrant’s Crush in Pittsburgh February 2016, California May 2016, and Buffalo October 2016.

Stewart Copeland joins the Pittsburgh Symphony to perform as percussionist for the world premiere of his Trapset (aka drum set) and Percussion Concerto No. 1 (“The Tyrant’s Crush”) on February 19 and 21, 2016. This is part of the Pittsburgh Symphony's showcasing composers as performers.

It will also be performed with the New West Symphony on May 13, 2016 in Oxnard, California, May 14 in Thousand Oaks, California, and May 15 in Santa Monica, California, as well as October 28 and 29, 2016 in Buffalo.

Here is the description by Stewart on Opus3 (http://www.opus3artists.com/utils/Downl ... 16orch.pdf):
1st Movement—POLTROONS IN PARADISE 16:00
The emphasis is on orchestral interaction with the percussion. The textures introduced by the bells, drums and mallets are colorized by soloists within the orchestral choirs, adding clear pitch to the implied tunes of the percussion figures. The atmosphere is agile and whimsical.

2nd Movement—MONSTER JUST NEEDED LOVE (But Ate the Children Anyway) 8:00
This movement is more about timbre than tune. Using compound meters rhythmic complexity can be achieved while keeping the pulse simple. The opening theme is a passagaglia by my old friend and mentor Eberhard Scheoner.

3rd Movement—Over the Wall 6:00
A rising dirge that builds in power and passion with tutti orchestra and hammering percussion. The harmony grows in density so that by the end the brass is stabbing with fat chords while the strings swirl and the woodwinds wind. I would hope to have the percussionists sweating by the end.

And more on the work:

3. Stewart performing his soundtrack to the 1925 Ben Hur in California, Seattle, and Europe. I saw it in 2014, and it was awesome.

It will be performed on February 29, 2016 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle with the Seattle Rock Orchestra conducted by Kim Roy.
http://www.stgpresents.org/tickets/alph ... ent/1167/-

It will be performed March 18 and 19, 2016, at the Pacific Symphony in Costa Mesa California (south of Los Angeles)
https://www.pacificsymphony.org/tickets ... -hur/12557

Also in Luxembourg on June 16, 2016.
https://www.philharmonie.lu/fr/programm ... en-hur/947

The website of Stewart’s agent Derek Power mentions that it will be “performed in a series of concerts in Europe throughout in 2015 and 2016 including engagements in Berlin, London, Luxembourg, Paris, and Vienna” although Luxembourg is the only one known at this point.

4. New Opera: Invention of Morel

The Chicago Opera Theater and the Long Beach Opera have commissioned a new opera with the music written by Stewart to premiere in 2017, the Invention of Morel.

The opera is based on the 1940 novel La invención de Morel by Adolfo Bioy Casares https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Invention_of_Morel

Here is the Chicago Opera Theater's release.

http://www.chicagooperatheater.org/the- ... n-of-morel

You can see selections from it performed in January 2016 starting around just before 40:00 with an interview with Stewart and the performance starting around 42:25 and ending around 1:11:13:

5. Dare to Drum film

The documentary film of Stewart’s composition Gamelan D’Drum will be told in a new 85 minute movie that was screened in Dallas in April 2015 as part of the Dallas International Film Festival. There presumably will be a wider distribution of the movie later. The film was made in part with kickstarter contributions from many of us.

6. Oysterhead reunion.

Stewart has mentioned in past interviews that an Oyesterhead reunion is a possibility if they can get all three of their schedules to work, including in this interview:
http://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/2015/ ... bWTg9.dpbs

7. Continuing videos from the Sacred Grove.
Stewart continues to make thrilling videos of sessions at the Sacred Grove.

8. "US Festival 1982: The US Generation Documentary" to be released

A documentary of the 1982 US Festival will be released, which includes performances by the Police and new interviews with Stewart. Info at:
http://www.facebook.com/usfestmovie
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2510016/

This is the formerly mysterious project involving a video of Stewart in white shorts and tube socks that Conroy reported from the 11/22/11 Stewart talk at the Grammy Museum.

During the whole Ben Hur/Strange Things Happen British media blitz in the fall, I remember reading something about Stewart being commisioned to compose the music to a ballet for some company in England. I only saw it mentioned in one article and never heard another word about it. Perhaps it was an error, or a slipped out secret.
In Dallas, the only game that really mattered was in the word gamelan.

Interesting. I missed that one. Anyone else recall it or seen a link?

I thought I read in one of those interviews that he was working on an opera piece that would premiere somewhere in the UK.

Phew! I was afraid I was hullicinating again.
Conroy, I'm quite sure it was a ballet. I'm much more interested in ballet than in opera. That's why that little tidbit of info stayed in my mind.

For your consideration... http://dallassymphony.com/Press_Releases.aspx?aID=69

Could this be related to the list above? I'll admit, I'm not sure where the gamelan would fit into this scenario. I could just be grasping at straws; the replay of La Jolla has me jonesing for more.

I suspect there may be something in these straws, although it is not a perfect fit.

Sam got the Synchronicity onesie from a good friend (and good Police fan). Not sure where she got it. Sam has a Stewart onesie he got from a Nutter that he should be able to wear shortly.
