You have no idea what a lovely Christmas gift you gave a number of us in your last question, lt. DM, Schmaffy and a few others, including me, go crazy (in a good way) debating the finer points of grammar and punctuation. I don't recall having a dust up about capitalization before though. As it's such a busy time of year the others may not chime in unless they are goofing around here and avoiding their responsibilities like I am.

Anyway, I capitalize Nutter. First, doing so accords the term mock self-importance, setting it on the same level as a nationality. But more importantly, it distinguishes the SC.net folks from the run of the mill nutter. In British slang, a nutter is a crazy person. A Nutter is a crazy person with an excuse and the backing of a bunch of other crazy people.

But then you have smax and visions and the like. These people apparently have no shift key on their computer key boards. so to them we are all nutters. they seem to also lack commas...but they're good at periods (sorry...full stops) they like to use them in ellipses...a lot. don't get me wrong...i love the way they write...it's like their own accent coming across in print.

I am constantly being pulled over by the grammar and spelling police in my own family. Having english professors and writers constantly taking the piss out of you by bathing your writing in the dreaded "red ink" is probably good for the soul. I can't tell you how many papers and personal notes came back to me looking like they had been dipped in blood.
That said, I apologize in advance for the hatchet job I do on the most basic sentence. I like the term Nutter with caps. It does lend it an special something.

Ditto, llady^: proper noun v. common noun. I rarely actually use the term, but that capital N gives it that extra ounce of bullshit gravitas.

In smax's defence, when you're a Freeman of the City of London, and therefore permitted to drive sheep across crucial bridges, bear arms in the city, and avoid arrest for drunkeness, you're probably too busy having a good time to grammar-check your sc.net posts.

I'll endorse dirtymartini's explanation of the origins of 'nutter'. Kimmy isn't around here too much these days, sadly, but her Twickenham Part 1 t-shirt was certainly my first exposure to the term. A marvelous garment, and a lovely lady.

I think a crucial part of the etymology might be the use of the dot in: "SC.Nutter". Clearly coming from the web doman via young kimmy. Sorry, I mean "Kimmy".
