There's a question that I have since I first joined Copelandia: what is the etymology of Nutter?
I first thought that Nutters was a person:

Man these Italian drivers are craaaaaazy! (Not our Nutters of course)

I googled it and looked on Wikipedia but I just couldn't find an answer!

My take on the origin of Nutter

The website is StewartCopeland.net rather than .com. I think this began as a distinction between those who primarily posted or followed SC.net as opposed to those who hung out more at ThePolice.com.

So we were the ".net"ers, which then became converted to Nutters.

Am I imagining this?

Exactly when it was or said or whomever said it first is a mystery. I do remember one of Dive's sig lines that said "Nutted by reality" or something like that. So perhaps it may have also been derived from that.
I'm guessing it was STEWART that coined it first, but it'll be a big excavation to find out the truth.
Myself, I don't quite have enough time to go through 70 million forum pages. It's not like I have the spare time of a lawyer.
BTW, "Nutted" has a porn connotation as well.

Au contraire, mon wookie: not so tough. Pretty sure Kimmy's the mother of the invention when she made this t-shirt:

for Twickers in 2007. I don't remember "Nutter" ever being used (in this specific sense) before then. Stewart did use it for his holiday greeting on the site later that year:



(though it's debatable whether or not the two relate, of course). I can't remember how much steam the term gained before the holiday greeting, but it certainly gained a lot after.

Sorry, Shangeris: I've just realized that we never actually defined nutter. So just in case you didn't already know: "nutter" is a British slang word that means crazy person. It has also come to mean a fan or devotee or someone very enthusiastic about something.

When I joined the forum in Nov. '07, the term Nutter was already pretty widespread, and it mystified me at first. I figured it out before too long though because some people were still using the terms sc.netter and sc.nutter. I also remember seeing scnutter, which I thought was some Nordic thing.
