OT - Billboard's Band of the Decade - WTF?!?

OT - Billboard's Band of the Decade - WTF?!?

Postby TheEqualizer on 21 Dec 2009 23:50

This is a big sign that the 2000s was a weak ass decade for music:

From the Ottawa Citizen

QUOTE

Billboard magazine has named Nickelback the top band of the decade.

The magazine's decade end chart of top artists of the decade places Nickelback at #9, between 50 Cent at #8 and Britney Spears, at #10. Nickelback was the highest-ranking band of the decade, only finishing behind solo artists Eminem, 50 Cent, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Nelly and Usher, for overall impact and importance.

The magazine also names Rapper Eminem as the top artist of the decade and says 'N Sync, led by Justin Timberlake, had the decade’s best-selling album with No Strings Attached, which sold more than 10 million copies.

Despite a distinct lack of critical acclaim, Nickelback — formed in Hanna, Alta. — has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. In the last decade, it released The State (2001), Silver Side Up (2001), The Long Road (2003), All the Right Reasons (2005) and Dark Horse (2008), which has garnered them a 2010 Grammy nomination for best hard-rock performance for the track Burn It To The Ground.

"We've just accepted that we're never going to be the critics' darlings, and we're OK with that,” frontman Chad Kroeger told Billboard in 2007.

But it’s not only music reporters who disagree with Billboard magazine’s assertion.

Readers of the U.K.’s Word Magazine recently voted Nickelback the worst band in the world, with Kroeger and company locking down an impressive 20 per cent of the vote. Looks like not everyone is a fan of greasy, bleached hair and enlightening, philosophical song titles such as Something in Your Mouth and S.E.X.

From top group of the decade to worst band in the world — only Nickelback could be so polarizing.

mini-barf

It's spreading like faster than the swine flu.

Hope this isn't any indication of how the rest of the century will pan out music-wise.

The entire thing seems like a listing of the horsemen of the musical apocalypse. Holy fuck. I hang my hopes on the likelihood that this will inspire or underscore change. Go indie musos, GO!

I honestly couldn't name a Nickleback song if I tried. I know I've heard them, but I have no idea when.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

I know nothing of Nickleback but find it interesting the highest group in the list is #9 and that it is the only group in the top ten.

Through most decades the groups are far more dominate than the individual performers, such as the Beatles, STones, Who in the 1960s, Led Zeppelin, SImon and Garfunkel, and Eagles in the 70s, and Police and U2 in the 80s. Even the rap/hip-hop stars of the 80s were groups such as Run DMC and Bestie Boys. (I don't know enough of music in the 1990s to comment other than Animal Logic :) )

It was individuals who dominated the 50s with Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Carl Perkins.

And there are always individual performers who stand out (Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Prince).

But it is telling that the groups are so absent from this decade. I wonder what the meaning of that is.
SC-There are a few crazy people on this planet. Sure sign of that is that they kinda like my music
