STING interview: A NEW POLICE ALBUM IS POSSIBLE !!!

STING interview: A NEW POLICE ALBUM IS POSSIBLE !!!

Postby Vince on 13 Dec 2009 05:06

I can believe what I just read in l'Express, a very serious French newspaper which publish an interview of Sting, made in September in Newcastle and publish now because of his venue in Paris for a concert:

Allez-vous enregistrer à nouveau ensemble ?

Hmmm... Peut-être. Et pourquoi pas ? Mais je ne veux en aucun cas faire un disque de reprises. Il nous faut de nouvelles compositions. Je m'en remets à l'inspiration. Elle a toujours gouverné ma vie.

I translate :

Will you (they're speaking of The Police) record together again ?
hmmm.... Maybe. And why not ? But in any case, I don't want to make a record of covers. We need new compositions. But I leave it to inspiration. It has always ruled my life.

Do you believe THAT ? !!!!
Hear something else about it ?

One day, I'll meet Stewart !

He said it but it will never happen. Stewart has no interest in going back to the studio to do drums for Sting's songs.

They may do a charity show in a few years but I don't believe a new album will ever happen. I know many are hoping otherwise but I am sure it won't.

Okay let's imagine Sting suddenly calls up Stewart :

"Stewart, let's do a new album. We'll do it the old way...no demos just basic song structures that we'll build together"

Would Stewart say no ? Having just read Strange thinngs happen, I'd say he would probably refuse, but I don't believe he would refuse, even so...

What you all think ?

Before thinking of a new Police album, I'm surprised to see such big mistakes in L'Express.
It's usually a very serious and well informed french newspaper. But they say "The Police sold 2 millions tickets in 90 minutes"... They also take the quote "We are The Police and we're back" to be from Vancouver. I think Sting said that at the Grammys. But maybe Sting repeated himself and said it twice...
Anyway, I'm quite cautious with this article.

That´s what i promised....they will record again.....in 2010/2011.....
For Sting it´s the best way to make more money....as he do with solo stuff .....!!!!!!!????

And i think for stewart it would be a great challenge....to play his drums again for the police !
It would be a dream...like it was before the reunion tour....all laughed about me...and many others like jose....but we believed in the rumours of 2006 christmas time.....and then it becomes reality......

This christmas time 2009 rumours about a new project or album.....
Will this be happen next year....???

I don´t like a new Sting Solo Album.....
A new sound....
A new way ....

Stewart plays so much instruments....like sting......
Reggae ?
Pop ?
Rock ?

How would they sound in 2010 ????
A difficult question.....but hope is there....

Sting is a master tease.
Its his job to keep interest in his catalog working for him.

A professional song peddler.
Nothing more.

The Police are as through as Mozart.

Wasn't in the press a few weeks ago that Sting said touring with Andy and Stewart made him physically ill?

I don't believe ANYTHING printed about Sting in the media because I sincerely think he just makes shit up as he goes along. I doubt he tells anyone in the press what is really on his mind.

I dunno. I still think Sting has a competition-with-Bono thing going. Back in the 80s he didn't know how things would shape up, so he broke up the band. But here we are 30 years later and U2 is going strong, Bono has this high profile and everyone worships him, etc.

The only way Gordo could compete is to put the band back together in earnest. But I sure as hell hope Stewart wouldn't take dictation, which from where I sit is about the only way Der Stingle would want to move forward with the project.

(puts on the unpopular hat)

I have three arguments against this being a good thing:

1) As a selfish consumer of music, what will I get? Will I get an album that I'm still playing 30 years from now? I doubt it - because gobsmackingly interesting, 'what is this!?!' is a rare thing, and name me a group of musicians who have done it 30 years after they first struck musical gold.

2) Again, as a selfish consumer of music, what will I miss as a result? I struggle to appreciate Sting's more recent work, but that's a matter of personal taste. He's a fine, fine lute player - no kidding, and I appreciate the fact that John Dowland is now a household name for the first time in centuries - I just wish someone else had taken vocal duties. Andy Summers got me to buy my first ever instrumental album, and will doubtless convince me in time that jazz can be uplifting. Stewart Copeland will hopefully continue to extend my music appreciation into odd corners of the musical world that I didn't know existed previously. None of them are 30-somethings. Selfishly I want them all to beaver away as individuals, like men possessed, in the service of my aural pleasure and musical education for as long as possible.

3) Unselfish point. I loved the reunion tour. Leaving aside the wonderful people and places I got to, there were moments of musical bliss for this punter. But did anyone honestly feel, at any gig, that this was a band that were so fired up with collective ideas/passion that they should get a studio/rehearsal room? If not, let's not bug them about recording or playing again. They're musicians (albeit fairly financially savvy ones ;-) ), not mechanics.

Hmm. Sting/Bono - completely different beasts to my eyes. Not least because those bands are completely different beasts. I don't thing you get to call all the shots as Bono when you're working with a gang you fell in with at school 30+ years ago. I don't think U2 are a collection of some of the greatest musicians on the planet - more a band who have figured out how to play to their individual strengths.

My opinion only, but The Police were more a marvelous supergroup-from-scratch-by-accident/(Copeland clan)design.

I'm at the point that I groan out loud whenever I see a post similar to this and think twice before even reading because the reality will be a letdown. As long as all three of them are amongst the living, there's a chance they could produce a new album. The likelihood is entirely a different question. If it does happen, the whole friggin' world will know about it instantly. Frankly, I'm more excited to hear how the gamelan piece turns out more than I wonder how a new Police album would sound like because it would probably be all Sting. The only thing that would get me excited would be if they jumped on the current band wagon and reunited for a an album tour and performed Regatta De Blanc in its entirety along with the b-sides.

Look here is my one or two cents

After reuniting with the Police two years ago, I truly believed that anything was and is possible. Sting can never ever say again " I will never go back to the Police ever again" because he did. My theory all along was to do this tour, see how it played out ( which it was very successful one) then take a break. It is possible that Sting and Stewart are just playing the media like a lot of musicians do all the time. After the break, it is possible ( not saying probable but still) they spoke about trying it again one last time before their time is really up. As I said , Sting and Stewart may just be throwing people off and maybe something is around the corner. Also if a good deal can be made with the three, who knows. As one person said, if they are all still alive, the idea of making a Police album is still possible. You just never know.

I'd say that holds for all three even.

Smudge summed up my feelings well:

Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.
