OT: What was your first album?

Heh. What a great variety of albums.

I never had my own CD player (I've since married into one) and never even bought my own first CD until around 2000ish, but I just can't remember which it was. I'm guessing R.E.M. of some sort.

I do, however, remember that my family had five 8-tracks that lived in my dad's light blue 1980-something Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (diesel): Rick Springfield's Working Class Dog, some Barry Manilow greatest hits album, some Oak Ridge Boys album of my dad's that the rest of us always vetoed, and 2 ABBA albums (one with some airplaney name like Departure? Arrival? the band was photographed sitting in a cockpit).

When I think childhood road trip, I hear ABBA.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

My Dad says he loved his 8-track player, but got rid of it and all his 8-tracks when he got his cassette player and cassettes... and it wasn’t long until he regretted tossing the 8-tracks. That reminds me my professor teacher the other day was sarcastically explaining to us what a VHS player was. Lol, We were born before the invention of DVD players, lol.

Barry Manilow, seriously? Wow... why?

My mom: she loved him. At any hour of any day, she could spontaneously break into an enthusiastic, if off-key, "Copacabana." I regret never having had the chance to take her to a Barry Manilow concert just to watch her get all squealy.

The 1st album I ever received as a gift was Barry Manilow. My sister was trying to expand my musical horizons.

Manilow is one of my guilty pleasures.

About 20 years ago I worked with a small team of people - all of us elected officers of a union, and therefore terribly serious. About half of us used to irritate the living shit out of the other half by singing together. We'd start with Oliver's Army, Shipbuilding, and pretty much anything Billy Bragg had released by that point. Regular application of alcohol during the evening would result in a descent into show tunes, and ultimately 'Copocabana', with the least coherent of the group making maraca noises.

We, the 'musicians', and our colleagues would never admit that we enjoyed the Barry stuff more than the Billy stuff. But we did.

Long time no post...been lurking as usual. Anyway, couldn't pass up this topic. First 45 with my own money was "Live and Let Die" by Paul McCartney and Wings. I was 5. First album was a year later and it was a doozy: Captain and Tenielle "Love Will Keep Us Together" - the one with their dog on the cover. This was 8-track time and I remember having Elton John, Eagles and the theme from S.W.A.T. Tastes changed (for the better)rapidly over the next few years.

Been fun to read what people bought back in the day.

Happy holidays to all!

Ya know, Elvis C has the chops. Being able to sing either "Oliver's Army" or "Shipbuilding" while stone sober is an accomplishment, to say nothing of being able to do it lubed up.

Smudge, you make me feel nostalgic. Hip hip for Billy B (never mind Barry).

First vinyl single I got: Beatles, Hey Jude? The long and winding road. Gift from my parents who didn't have a clue what record to buy to accompany my tiny record player.

First album I bought: Zenyatta Mondatta.

(Spastic cruise director post: )

Hahaha. My mother would have loved seeing all the Barry love here. And then broken into an enthusiastic, if off-key, "Copacabana." Or "Looks Like We Made It" if we were lucky.

I love how Simon remembers just about every milestone! The best I can do is remember a few of which cassettes were stolen. (Sorry, Bradlees.)

I just noticed we have a new guest in this thread. Sorry for the belated greeting, icpalma. Welcome!

And Yay to see NathanA.

Dive, sorry if I've asked this before: is that one of your portraits? It's very good.

BTW, Plutonic has a great answer to the OT as well, but he's locked out at the moment. Everybody wave to Pluto!

I wish I could remember which was first...

I know I started saving up for my own 45's and cassettes at the age of 11 or 12. Before that I only had stuff my parents bought me. The first one could have been The Police, Toto, or Duran Duran. I vividly remember buying Asia's first. Now I collect all that wonderful '70s and '80s music I couldn't afford back then- most of it on LP.
