OT: Pimp a Band Thread

Postby Chatchka on 17 Nov 2009 18:15

Obviously, I get geeked about music, but this band has had me really geeked for years. They haven't released anything new in about six years, so I feared the worst for them. When listening to their last cd yesterday, I was inspired to google them to see what was up and found, to my delight, that they have a new CD just out! One could argue that their sound is too mainstream, but there is something about it and their songwriting that has always lifted them to my consciousness above the other noise out there. I feel certain that you've heard them before, but I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do!

This article about them has both a Sting reference and a Peart reference! (mock) Horrors!

Sooooo, now please continue this thread by pimping some band -- old or new -- that you like and hope others might like too.

My favorite new band of the last year or two is The Hoosiers--who I've already squeed a bit about before, yes, but when have I passed up an opportunity to do so again?

Why do I love them? Let's see...

1. They're a pop/rock trio. I love trios, in case that's not obvious. Just seems the perfect balance for letting each member of a band have room to shine without the music getting overly cluttered and crowded. Oddly enough, it's a 2/3rds British trio like another one I know we love around here (although in The Hoosiers' case, it's 2/3rds British, 1/3 Swedish...)

2. The singer, Irwin Sparkes, has an amazing vocal range. When I first started listening to them, I really couldn't tell if their singer was a woman or a man. He has a lovely falsetto and beautiful quality to his voice. And I'm not usually a person who heavily responds to vocals over music.

3. Sense of humor. These guys crack me up big time, whether its in their official videos, their Twitter stream, or their regular youtube vids made for the fans.

4. Oh yeah, their fans. They really seem to love their fans and interacting with them. That totally puts them in my win column also.

5. One very hot, lanky drummer. ::cough::

Anyway, if you want to check them out, go here:

We Didn't Start The Fire (AMAZING cover version): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyWMcGUwSnA
Cops & Robbers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51-zu_dxZBs (channeling a little Cure with this one...)
Goodbye Mr. A: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yHeViro14c (yes, it's a rip off of Mister Blue Sky. And your point is...?)

I'm seriously this close to planning a UK trip just to try to see them when the new album is finally released...that's how much I love these guys!

Oh hey and while I'm pimping?

Amanda. Fucking. Palmer.

She's playing in Philly tomorrow night @ the TLA and I will be there for sure. Anyone else in the Philly area who knows what's good for them should be there, too.

Amanda <fucking> Palmer is quite amazing, as are the Dresden Dolls.

Broken Social Scene absolutely blows me away, ever since I get into them and actually got to see them this summer...new album to be released early 2010, but You Forgot it In People and their self titled album are in my book way up there in terms of best recent music.

There are only two more dates on this tour right now...you southern-US folks should check her out! The opening (+ support) group, Nervous Cabaret, is really great as well.

Well, shit. That's three days from now, or I'd try to make it - already got plans for the weekend. Bummer.

Was just thinking that - as I'm addicted to the Underground Garage station on Sirius - that I'd try some of the bands Little Steven's got booked onto his Wicked Cool record label these days. I've heard Chesterfield Kings are pretty good.

Also, they've been playing the hell out of that new Raveonettes record....www.theraveonettes.com

live nation has been pimping the Raveonettes pretty hard. So, on Dive's recommendation I may have a listen.

Dresden dolls rule, so now I have to check out Amanda Palmer.

And the Chesterfield Kings? WOW. blast from the past. I have seen them tons, and they were awesome, but it's been ages. Used to play the 9:30 waaaaaaay back. :) So, def check em out girl.

But not today. Today we are off to see LKKinetic and the PIXIES :)

This sounds really awesome and is oh, so tempting if any Boston peeps would be interested. Florida-area peeps can also catch her Dec 13 in Orlando...follow her twitter stream as even this week she had a "ninja gig" in Asheville. Sometimes you can even score guest-list passes just by tweeting before a show (as I did last week in Philly!)

12/31/09 AMANDA FUCKING PALMER in Boston, MA Boston Symphony Hall
Time: 8:00pm
Admission: $45-$160
Age restrictions: All Ages
Address: 301 Massachusetts Ave.

AFP will join Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops on Thursday, December 31st, at 10PM, to ring in the New Year at Symphony Hall. Doors for this New Year’s Eve celebration will open at 8:00PM with pre-concert entertainment, and all concert-goers will be treated to a gourmet boxed dinner. The evening’s festivities will feature Keith Lockhart leading the Boston Pops, and will feature material from Palmer’s punk cabaret group The Dresden Dolls, her solo album, “Who Killed Amanda Palmer,” and much more.

There's a great Xmas comp available on the Underground Garage/Wicked Cool store. Just got it and thought I'd put it out here for fellow Xmas fanatics (and hey, it's almost time for the holiday mix post! I'll re-post last year's if I can't find anything awesome and new to put on it, but something tells me virtually the whole of the Xmas-A-Go-Go disc will be on it.)

http://www.wickedcoolrecords.com/shop/c ... go-go.html

“We know things are a little rough out there this year so inspiration is on the way! We have an amazing Wicked Cool Christmas gift for you this year. How about Keith Richards’ classic ‘Run Rudolph Run’ available for the first time on CD! Bob Seger’s extremely rare “Sock It To Me” never available on a single compilation, Darlene Love and the E Street band’s ‘All Alone On Christmas’ only available on a hard to find soundtrack. Plus favorite Christmas classics by The Kinks, The Ramones, Clarence Carter, Rufus Thomas, Roy Wood, and the impossible to find ‘Santa Claus is Surfin’ To Town’ by the totally amazing Soupy Sales! We’re proud of all our records but this one is not only the coolest Christmas party record ever it¹s full of collectible classics as well. Happy Holidays baby!” – Little Steven Van Zandt

ETA: Oh hey! It's on sale, along with a fun shirt I also bought:

Been listening to a lot of online radio, and this here's my favorite:

www.devilsnight.com

You can listen via ITunes - click on the 'Radio' listing underneath 'Applications' & 'Ringtones'. Devils' Night is the third or fourth entry under the 'Alternative' heading.

Apparently they also do live events in the L.A. area. Right now they're playing an obscure 50s go-go band, but in the last hour they've played Nick Cave, Anita Carter, Southern Culture, Devo, & a whole other laundry list of crap the Nutters would likely love.

Bumping because it is Friday! I'm going to see a new band tonight. Jaden South.

I'm attending because of a constellation of important factors.
1. My buddy owns the venue.
2. My friend is opening the show.
3. I was able to get a babysitter.
4. I will always choose live music over any other kind of entertainment.

I went to the website of the headliner to grab an advance listen to their tunes. And, now I can add another reason to attend.

5. Setting aside all of my other wonderful reasons to attend, this is really nice music!

Check 'em out. http://jadensouth.com/media/music/

And, check out my friend Jayne Kelli too. (kind of a Radiohead/Tori Amos sound) http://www.myspace.com/jaynekelli

Shangeris,

I think I remember that you are a drummer too. Check out the Modern Drummer Festival 2006 videos for a master class with Jason McGerr from DCFC. Pretty cool show he put on!

Yes, I'm a drummer! Thank you for the video. He's a very good drummer even if he does very simple thing; he has that groovy-pattern style wich I momentarily like very much.
