Season 1 of EC's Spectacle with...Now on Sale

At least, it is in Canada, and I'm guessing the US, too. I bought my copy on the weekend at HMV. It, of course, has the episode with The Police taped in front of a Nutterific audience. I haven't watched it yet, so I'm not sure if it's the Canadian, American or British edit. Perhaps it's the whole thing in its unedited glory. I know that unlikely, but it makes for a nice dream.

Anyhow, many of us have a copy of that episode by uncommercial means. If you want to get all the episodes, a load of great music and interviews, and feel all ethical-like at the same time, pick it up or maybe ask Santa to get it for you.

ETA: I also picked up The Foo Fighter's Greatest Hits and Elvis Costello Live at the El Mocambo. The latter is a commercial release of an epic concert that became an enormously popular bootleg. My cousin claims to have been in the audience, as does an implausibly large number of Torontonians of her generation.

Wow! I guess I got a bargain. The five disc DVD set cost $44.99, Canadian with one Can. dollar running at 95 cents US right now. And I missed the launch sale price of $38 by a couple of days.

I still haven't had time to watch any of it yet (and at 650 minutes, it may be a while before I do), but I did open the pack. Sorry, but the DVDs are seriously cute. The label side is made up to look like a 45. It warms my luddite heart to see that. There is a little photo album thingie inside and the centrefold is of Elvis with The Police. (Down, E-L and you other Floozies! It's not that type of centrefold.) Well, actually, the shot is of Elvis with Sting and Pete, The Imposters' drummer. (Imposter indeed! Posing as Stewart.) However, the shot also shows the back of some of the audience. I think I see a blurry Dietmar, or maybe it's a blurry Pluto. If any of you were lucky enough to be in the first few rows, maybe the back of your head adorns the photo too.

Most important: this official release contains Purple Haze (performed by The Police and EC), which was NOT broadcasted during any of the TV-broadcasts!

Haven't got Spectacle yet (Christmas eh?)

So I grabbed Elvis Live at the Elmo CD in Toronto.

Holy Shit this is a great CD. The reviews were luke warm saying the recording is flat. I didn't expect much from a Live to radio recording but it is awesome. Little bits of Reggae in there. Great guitar sounds...so raw.

Elvis was and is great.

OH and I said I played the Elmo in 1998, it was 1988.

Cheers and I cannot believe I made it to Friday !!!

Party Y'all !

Dietmar is asking whether the DVDs in the box set are coded for specific region (Europe is 2) or is region
free (0).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

Theoretically, if a DVD is coded for a specifc region, it will only work in a DVD sold in that specific region. A DVD bought in Europe and is coded Region 2 isn't supposed to work on a Region 1 coded DVD player in the US and Canada. Although, a lot of DVD players that are supposed to be code specific have hidden codes you enter in the remote to allow you to change the region or make the player region free. Some DVD players have to have hacked firmware flashed on it via a CD-R or reprogramming the EEPROM chips to make them region free.

I'd love to answer Dietmar's question, but I'm basically clueless. Is there any way to tell about the codes from the DVD packaging or when you actually play the discs?

Oh regions.

Hi Dietmar
The DVD on Amazon uk is region 2 (Europe) but it doesn't specify for the Blu - Ray so maybe it doesn't apply.

I found out about regions when I bought a region 1 by mistake. It wouldn't play on the tv but it did on the computer. I didn't mind 'cos it was an awful film anyway. :)

if they offer Blurays on Amazon UK they will probably be codefree or region code B (for Europe), but I have to make sure of that

thanks for your efforts

To promote this DVD, Costello was on Jimmy Fallon last night. He had recently been having some voice problems but still sucked it up and played a waaayy cool version of "High Fidelity" from his Get Happy!!! LP with the Roots at the end of the show. It is worth seeking out on YouTube or what have you. Also, Fallon had the balls to ask Costello to sing a rare song a cappella, which Costello appeared not to be ready for but Fallon had printed out the lyrics for him. It was interesting.
There is no bigger gong.
