How can you not love this man???

Word. Party. With lots of cake.

Also, I agree with what Gio said earlier. Sting MUST have read the book, or at least the parts pertaining to him. I cannot believe he wouldn't. If someone as close to you as Stewart is/was to Sting wrote a book that at least part pertained to you, wouldn't you read it?

“A lot of bands when they start out have a semblance of democracy. Democracy doesn't work in a band. You have to have one guy driving the ship. And, uh … that's me.”

Sting, you know I love you more than my luggage*, but what the hell? Are you serious? Democracy doesn't work in a band? I beg to differ.

I get the impression that more than likely Sting had someone else read the book and tell him about the parts about himself.

I dont know why but the main question I have is this:

Stewart gave Sting a beautiful french horn for this birthday. I thought that was very "sweet" of Stewart and gracious really as a gift from one musician to another.

As far as was reported I do not believe that Sting gave Stewart any type of gift whatsoever.

But in STH Stewart says when he & Sting had an argument he asked for the french horn back and Sting said he trashed it! I found this to be SO malicious... was stewart being sarcastic or did Sting really ruin the gift?
If so I would take his "sweet" remark the mark very much in an arrogant sarcastic negative.

I've been a Sting fan but that said I will admit that that type of meanness just seems vindictive and petty and not very brotherly :(

I haven't commented on this thread thus far, but I did want to respond to this.

Obviously, none of us know what really happened - but I found the passage quoted above to be one of the funniest parts of the book. It just seemed to me to be very much a "sibling rivalry" kind of episode - one brother does something nice for the other, five minutes later they want to kill each other, they both "stew" (pardon the pun) overnight, and then snark at each other the next day to break the ice - almost as if to acknowledge the previous night's anger and it's ridiculousness. Family loves each other - but they don't have to LIKE each other. BUT they're family, and that's a bond that can't just cease to exist. Think of it like Pee Wee Herman saying, "I know you are, but what am I?" after being called a name. Can you REALLY imagine Sting and Stewart "hugging it out" after an argument? Or would it be more in character for them to snipe at each other the next day as a way to let it go?

I believe that it happened - and I believe those were probably close to or the exact words used - and I also believe that the whole exchange was 100% tongue-in-cheek.

I'm not writing very coherently today. I hope this makes sense.

Re: the tuba incident - I kinda agree with both Maria and Schmaff. I also thought it was one of the funniest parts of the book, but one that made me squirm a bit, wondering if it was just a joke on Sting's part or not. If he was simply trying to push Stewart's buttons in that brotherly love/hate way, cool. If he really did trash it? Well, that's just plain mean and pretty uncool as a musician (the only band that gets a free pass from me to trash perfectly good, innocent musical instruments is The Who.)

I'll also put in a vote that I highly doubt Stingo's read it (at least none of the Police-related chapters), for the aforementioned reason that he's always claimed to hate reading/watching anything about himself.

Contrary to earlier reports, Sting has NOT read STH. It's on his "pile". http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music/1 ... ing.music/
