Sting's new album

Just when I think he had reached bottom, he grabs a shovel and digs a bit deeper.
It's so boring it hurts!
I had to fast forward through each song to make them more appealing...
be afraid, be very afraid - it's an all time low
I'm interested in the reactions of the "hardcore" Sting fans

He's doing some TV appearances in NY later this month, according to his page on Facebook. Also appearing at a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame benefit event that same week. Unfortunately he's not appearing the same night as U2 so if I go for a last minute cheap seat it's going to be for the night with U2. Sorry Sting, but I already saw a lot of you these past two years and U2's album is more fun.

Anyway here are the dates for Sting's TV gigs: OCTOBER 27 THE TODAY SHOW, OCTOBER 28 THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, OCTOBER 29 THE VIEW

I've only heard bits and pieces of the new album and I was not liking what he did with Gabriel's Message, why is he trying to sing in a deeper than normal voice? That's about all I can say for now until I hear the whole thing.

Sigh. I was really hoping that Tourzilla would have inspired Sting to improve his solo stuff. I'm still keeping an open mind about this, but Dietmar's opinions are usually pretty reliable . . . EXCEPT WHEN IT COMES TO OYSTERHEAD.

I listened to the snippets on itunes and The D is dead on, imo. It's totally lame.

Interesting thread.

Like most I was gagging for a rock album and when I heard Sting was releasing an album with a 'winter' theme well I guess I was disappointed.

Anyway to cut to the chase having heard the album...I LOVE IT.Seriously LOVE IT.Its different,original and well, for me, quite a refreshing listen.

Its a music I wouldn't normally listen to .. but hey I did and Loved it.

I suppose 'One man's meat is another man's poison'.

I'd recommend it.Big.Give it a try.

Checking out the snippets on itunes...not enough to make up my mind. Will wait to give it a full listen before deciding as some tracks sound potentially interesting and about what I was expecting given the subject matter...(though a few are definitely sounding cringeworthy in just 30 seconds...)

I really did used to like Sting's music a lot. I supposed I should rephrase the comment. I don't like this particular sort of music. Slow and boring. For me, if music is going to drag that much, it should be interesting and what I've listened to simply isn't. Not my bag.

here's the (slightly more eloquent) review I wrote for another website - don't know if it will be shown there - so here:


It's not a big secret that I'm a huge fan of The Police - but not so much a fan of all the solo efforts of The Police's members. The last Sting record I really loved was "Mercury Falling". "Brand New Day" had 3 or 4 good songs. "Sacred Love" didn't have a single good song, just about 15 seconds in "This War" which were up to old standards of songwriting and performance.

Still - every time a new Sting album is released I want it to be great. I want to love the music again and to see him on tour with good songs. But it seems he's completely lost it... No good new songs for about 10 years now !!

After the lute album and The Police's tour he should have been able to come up with a few decent songs, but it seems he doesn't have it in him anymore. So here's another record with traditionals or some of his own old songs. But it still could have been good if you do it right. Only it isn't.

The main problem is that Sting's voice and this kind of music just don't fit together. His singing on the new album sounds pretentious and just wrong. There are very few moments (like in "The Burning Babe") when I recognize old greatness in his voice (not in the song, it's still rubbish). And the occasional moment when he does some harmonies with himself... But for most of the songs Sting sounds as if he had been ill during the recording sessions.

"Soul Cake" is my favourite on the album - if you can call it that. Because the song is barely OK. The rest is so boring I'm forced to fast forward on every try to listen to the songs. He even ruins "The Hounds Of Winter" and "Gabriel's Message".

I won't be affraid of his new album I'm affraid of the comments I read on Stingo forum....jeeezzz, they must be kidding about our drummer.
anyway, and considering Stewart comments I know Sting his using everything he has to make that winter's night sound like north pole, that's why you go forward all the time...frozen music..brrbrrr I'm getting cold

Nice to hear something positive about it.

I haven't heard it yet but hope to buy it soon.

I've never listened to 'the lute album' but I really grew to like Sacred Love. I wasn't sure about it to start with but had the time to listen to it a few times when I was laid up with a broken leg. I now think it's a fantastic album to have on my i-pod when I walk the dogs on the beach. If the latest album is as good a walking album as Sacred Love then I'll be a happy dog walker.
