Sting's bass effects circa 1979-80

hm.. bought and trialed an mxr phase 90 - the custom shop 'hand wired' 1974 script logo reproduction.
it sucks the sh&t out of my tone. volume drop and treble both badly affected. are the custom shop reissues just bad or was the original the same, and simply run along side a preamp or something to offset the tone issues....?

In the Police cover band I mixed in the 90s we used an original 70s MXR Phase 90 and it worked just fine...

I have noticed that when I go direct into the soundboard, using the effect it sucks tone and specially volume. While when going in the amp not. I wonder if it is an impedance/pre issue.
I still have to try going into the amp with the effect and then DI into the desk, or run it through the effects loop.

Here’s the thing, I ran the bass into the pedal then into the amp during rehearsal (by the way I’m not the bass player but I supply the gear) and the tone was sucked dry. I thought these ’74 custom reissues were the shizzle…? I’d rather not have to hook up another pedal to compensate for the loss in tone and volume…

What became of your quest, by the way?

I ask because I've recently picked up the bass again after a LONG time and I've been practicing to some of our boys' albums. That, and the Rockpalast '80 DVD 8)

I know that Andy's setup is well documented at the great "Zenyatta Andatta" site, but any leads on Sting's?

i sold my mxr reissue phaser and have a byoc phaser on the way. if that sucks tone i'll buy a diamond phase pedal.
stings' gear is documented at the wiki, all info is based on what's in the original tour guides from the '80's, i think...

Thanks for the link. For some reason, the Policewiki never seems to stay in my head as a resource.
