Fingers crossed for you. After this weekend there isn't much that would be a good fit for them on the european festival circuit. Gutted they haven't done a Metro/Melkweg thing in London - but we are spoiled rotten here.

Not quite sure how Paris is going to pan out. Calling themselve 'Les Petits Pois' and going on after Sliimy (who is huge in France) should prove interesting.....

Hmmm. I'd go for Cleveland. Or maybe Chicago, depending on the venue (I'd be rooting for November, but I know Lara'll be home by then.)

No chance of a day ticket for Reading/Leeds then?

23rd October-11th November I'll be east, and certainly close enough to run flailing like a maniac towards either city if it turns out to be my only chance...

But yes, CA in September/October would definitely be more convenient. Thanks Dr G, I know you're checking my itinerary, such as it is.

Back from Reading.

Wow. The NME/Radio 1 tent is pretty huge. By the time they wheeled out Mr Grohl's drum riser (which got a reaction that most bands would settle for at the END of a killer set), it must have been pretty much packed. I'm guessing, as I had foolishly parked myself about 5 people back from the barrier, and couldn't turn around to look by that point.

'Feverish expectation' doesn't really describe the atmosphere adequately, but it's all I've got.

Of course the problem with such expectation is that it is never going to be met, right?

Er, no, 'wrong' as it happens. That was hands down the most extraordinary, tight, exhillarating 50-something minutes of rock I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. The sound quality was less than superb - it's a festival - but it was good enough to boggle the ears. A lot of the time I had no idea what was going on rhythm-wise. I was having too much fun to try and count. Lots of shifts, playing one pattern against another, but something solid underneath it. The guitars were a little low in the mix for my aging ears, but holy hell that Homme guy can play.

At one point, I swear we were getting four part vocal harmony, on top of insanely wonderful instrumentation, and at that point my brain went mushy and I rather lost the plot. That's John Paul Jones, Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and Alain Johannes all SINGING AT US. Boggle.

They shamefully ignored supergroup convention, and all appeared to be actively enjoying each other's company on stage. Inevitably, there were loud chants of 'Dave Grohl' every time the video screens provided a close up of a very sweaty drummer between songs. (He's something of a Reading legend: this is the second time his 'new band' has stuffed that tent full of sweaty humanity, and we'd probably elect him Prime Minister over here if he ran.) Mr Grohl looked a little sheepish about this after a while; Mr Homme merely egged everyone on (and possibly giggled - are slightly scary alt-rock gods supposed to giggle?) JPJ kept grinning, at his bandmates, at the audience, and sometimes just to himself. I guess this is more fun than Led Zep would be right now.

In summary - it was fucking brilliant. Album is due in the autumn apparently. I hope to god there is a tour, with dates announced more than 10 minutes ahead of time, and this isn't just a brief summer fling.

Lara and Hannah. Ladies, I owe you big time.

Thanks hon, that was awesome. I am so STOKED you got to see them. Just makes me salivate even more at the prospect of seeing them myself.

And yes, JHo seems like a giggler to me. It's that pudgy midsection. I reckon he'd squeal like a girl if you poked it. I'd sure like to try.

Okay, I need to step away from the keyboard before this gets (even) messier.

I think pretty much the entire NME tent, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, was ready to poke, snog, tickle, and otherwise molest (in a pleasurable way) pretty much everyone on stage. So there may be a bit of a queue.

If it eases your pain a little EQ, know that the venue was a dust-filled scrum. I'm going to be hawking up bits of Berkshire field for days. On the upside, I didn't get a pint pot of piss emptied over me. I fear that took the gloss off the experience for the young woman in front of me.

And here's a boot of Lowlands (haven't downloaded it myself, but you're better at this stuff than I am)
