It was not until about a week later that I saw Stewart present The Flag to the audience, have it mounted, salute it and give it a massive point before starting to jam with Andy. And that was only courtesy of Youtube.

Had to look for that Youtube.

Part 45

I relished each moment as The Police performed the encores. Pleasing though it was, “Purple Haze” did not surprise me too much because I had seen it at Jones Beach 2, but most of the audience seemed confused then thrilled by this unexpected addition to the set list. I really focussed on Stewart’s playing on the percussion rack during “King of Pain”, realizing that I’d likely never see this piece of musical magic performed live again. I enjoyed everything, but especially the little stuff--Andy booting errant CHA balls into the crowd, shirtless Sting trying to bring sexy back despite his suspenders (and no doubt succeeding in the eyes of his admirers), Stewart joyfully throwing sticks with such abandon that Jeff actually wore a hard hat while sneaking around the back to adjust bits of the kit. And all the while, The Flag hung on stage behind Stewart. It looked so right, as if it had always been there since the first show in Vancouver.
According to our paper flag directives, we were to wait until EBYT before facing the THANK YOU side toward the stage. However, half way through “So Lonely”, I noticed that most people had already turned their flags around. It’s hard to contain gratitude at times like these. I turned mine around, too. I could see that Sting and Andy appeared truly touched by the green flood of appreciation. Stewart looked so damn happy all night that I honestly didn’t notice a difference in him as the thank you’s sprouted up everywhere. Suddenly, it was “Next To You”, and the pictures on the screen and the lights were flashing at break neck speed while the boys gave it their all. Then, bam, it was done. Well, almost. Sting was taking off his bass, but, as usual, Stewart and Andy were still finishing off “the washing up”. Sting gave his customary swipe of the hand in their direction as if to say, “Oh, never mind them!” And then, with one last resounding crash, the concert was over. There were hugs; there were bows; there were deafening cheers. And of course, there were points. I was too full of feeling at that moment to take in many details. Mostly, I remember being surprised that I had no desire to cry. I had packed my horrid green purse full of tissues as I had been fairly sure that I’d be a blubbering mess. Instead, I was grinning like mad and was filled with contentment--that rare degree of contentment that makes some moments in your life stand out like crystal dew drops on the morning grass. This was not just closure. This was fulfillment.

Part 46

Fulfillment. And then some guy dressed in drag and posed on the gong platform rose up on the stage and tinny opera music began blaring through the arena. I later found out that the guy was Charlie Hernadez, the tour’s stage manager, but at the time his appearance drew a collective “Huh?” from the audience. Then we started piecing it together. “He’s supposed to be an opera singer?” “Oh, he’s a fat lady!” “And he’s singing…as in ‘it ain’t over til the fat lady sings.’” “Oh, alrightee, then…” It was a thinker. I wouldn’t say the gag spoiled the moment, but rather it possibly saved it from becoming maudlin. Still, I couldn’t help but wonder what all the fans who are not native English speakers were making of this little spectacle.
There were a few more hugs, waves and bows and Stewart did some uber-pointing to the pit. Just before leaving the stage, Stewart took off his shirt and threw it into the front row. When I regained consciousness, MSG had pretty much cleared out. Seriously though, that was just the cherry on the sundae for me.
I floated down the stairs toward the exit and was joined by Schmaffy and That’s Alright for Stew, a quiet forum member with one of the greatest names around. I was wearing a grey Police t-shirt that listed on the back all the tour dates from the last leg of the tour. I had checked off in marker all the dates I had attended. A stranger just behind me gestured toward my back and said, “It looks like you had a busy week. Which show did you like best?”
First I pointed over my left shoulder, “Buffalo in May because I had front row seats.” Then I pointed down the right side near my waist, “But the second Jones Beach was astounding. And of course, this one tonight was out of this world.”
A couple in their twenties was beside me and heard the exchange. The woman politely inquired, “Would you mind me asking where you got that green sign from? I saw so many of them. There was even one on stage. What are they all about?”
She might as well have asked Newton if he minds talking about gravity. As usual, I forewarned them that it will take a while to explain. They were okay with that. So, we stood to the side of the crowds streaming down the ramp heading out of the Garden, and I began my tutorial. This time I had lots of visual aids to assist me in my lesson--my flag, my t-shirt with dates, my name tag and my ticket. The two listened attentively, only interrupting to say things like, “That is so cool!” At the end, they asked for the name of Stewart’s website and then had ME pose for a picture holding my flag. Either I had just made two more konverts or I had been speaking with a couple of psychology students and we are all now featured as a case study in a graduate thesis somewhere.

I'm in the middle of the last installment, but I'm also in the middle of packing for my family vacation. We leave tomorrow morning for New York. Honestly. Some of you may know that we've been there before.
Anyway, I really wanted to get this sucker done by midnight my time, but it looks like I'll have to go a bit past my deadline. Oh well, I pulled a little overtime on this date last year, too. I promise that I'll be done by midnight Hawaiian time. And I promise that I'll be drinking a hell of a lot of coffee during my drive tomorrow.

The latter part of what you said sort of sums up my thoughts over the last little while. Your picture of the lovely one year old Stewina is just gorgeous. But I feel she's mocking me a little: "Look at how much I've accomplished in a year, lady! What's your problem?"

I'm almost there though. I'll be done before you can say, "Alloha August 8!"

Part 47

I found myself back in the great green current that flowed into Fat Annie’s. The post-gig gathering was similar to the pre-gig one, but there seemed to be even more people, more noise and more laughs. We were celebrating The Police as well as our old friendships and newly cemented ones. I ended up having a few rounds in a booth with Maud, Lynne, Madgrad, JenX and inflatable Sally. Schmaffy came up to us with the little Nutter autograph book that she had made especially for the occasion. We all signed it, even Sally. Next, two Japanese women, one of whom was Midori if I recall correctly, walked over to us, bowed slightly and in the loveliest and most polite English asked to borrow Sally for a photo. Their shy, respectful manner seemed humorously incongruous to the act of posing on either side of an inflated sex toy in a rowdy New York bar. However, the picture with the ladies’ beaming smiles somehow encapsulated much of what I love about Nutterdom.
Eventually, the staff at Fat Annie’s began nicely kicking us out as they wanted to close down. What happened to the city that never sleeps? A number of people decided to call it a night. One group planned to head off to another bar with a later closing time while the gang I was with chose to go to The Tic Toc Diner. I had heard about a few previous fun times some Nutters had had in this place and was glad for the opportunity to go there. Many warm embraces were exchanged before going our separate ways. I can’t remember everyone who was at the Tic Toc that night (very early morning actually), but I believe our crew included Kellie, Mo, smudge, Hannah, conroy, Dietmar, Dive, Gina, her Papa, Amy and Nancy. Besides that bunch, I recall sitting closest to bella, CG5 and Schmaffy. The four of us were giddy, exhausted, ridiculously happy and maybe more than a little drunk. I can’t remember any thing in particular that made us laugh, but everything was completely hilarious. It got to the point were a single word could render us helpless with laughter. I haven’t experienced that type of thing too many times since my university student dorm days. And if it wasn’t for the persistent cell phone calls from my daughters, I would have thought I was back there. Each time, they started their call with the same question: “Don’t you know what time it is?” Each time, I ended their call with the same promise: “I’ll leave soon.”
Smiling broadly, Charlie Arnold walked into the diner around 3 a.m. As soon as he greeted us, his cell phone sounded to indicate a text message. He read it to himself then loudly and pleasantly announced, “It’s from my wife and I’m in deep shit. Good night!” He turned around and walked out.
A few minutes later, Dancerina and Sporterella called me again. The Boy had been asleep for some time, but my daughters said they would not be able to sleep until I was safely back in the hotel. I promised them that I’d leave as soon as I finished my coffee and pancakes in blueberry sauce, which tasted heavenly, like all food does at 3 a.m. My girls said they were hungry and wanted pancakes with blueberries too. I said I’d do my best but I hardly thought I could get a take out order of pancakes at that hour. But, bless The Tic Toc Diner, I could! Once the order was ready, I had no more excuses. I made my final round of hugs and goodbyes for the night and walked out to hail a cab.
Ahead of me lay a very long drive home on very little sleep, the hassles of returning my rental car, finalizing my insurance claim and buying a new car. Just beyond that, I would be faced with shaking off my summer mode and preparing myself and my children for another school year. But none of that mattered right then. As I sat in the back of the cab with a warm package of pancakes on my lap, I was filled with an inner warmth. It was fucking 3:45 a.m., and I was in a city that serves take out pancakes in blueberry sauce anytime you want--a city that The Police wisely chose to host their grand finale concert. I was leaving people I love and heading for people I love even more. It doesn’t get any better than that.
