Which voice do you like better?

Me for Police songs I like his old voice better. Yeah it got ... more sufisticated, which works for his solo stuff, but I like his old voice better.

Definitely the voice during the police days, but i do have the feeling Sting was holding back (a bit) during the songs of the rehearsel "session".

Will be interesting to see if he tries to get some more power into his singing during the tour...

Give the guy a little time.

If you watch the Grammy's again you can hear at the very ,very end of Roxanne Sting kinda does his old Police "howl" and goes up in pitch and you can hear (just for a second) that old "shriek" like he used to do.

Wait until you are sitting in your seat watching them live...you will be saying Wow! he sounds great.

The rehearsals were just that. Like Stewart said the first days they sounded rough like a bar band and in a few days they started to sound like a theatre band and soon they will sound like a stadium band.

Takes a little time.

They are going to blow peoples minds, trust me.

I saw a tv interview years ago - I think it was Parkinson or Wogan on BBC, and Sting said that in his Police days he wasn't singing as such , more like shouting - and that is way he always had laryngitis.

He had singing lessons on how to look after his voice etc and I assume his style changed a little to accomodate it.

Sting sounds pretty freaking good--how many singers blow their voices out and have to jump down whole octaves on songs they used to howl--Sting modulated a few times but overall I would say his voice has held up miraculously...as for which is better, its like two completely different genres...we'll have to see what happens after they hone the Police sound!

I think Sting sounds much better with Stewart and Andy--I was watching the Top of the Pops Sting BBB Crown Jewels of Sting and when he got to Roxanne, I was "insisting" on Stewart's drum parts by using the floor, couch and endtable--my poor hubby!

So when I vote "Police Days" I am including this time around--i.e. whenever he is with the Police!

There was an interview with Paul McCartney on NPR. The journalist was marveling at how he could still sing so high "at his age(!)" Sir Paul replied that he's always believed that if you [i]can[/i] hit the notes, then you [i]will[/i] hit them.

I think Stingo has a few tricks up the old sleeve. He already sounds way better than he did during the Sychro concert. That was lame, to say the least. The Do Wop Babes were his only salvation.

I am with Bongoboy, give Sting sometime. Not only Sting, give our lovely trio sometime to accomplish together...

I haven't been a fan of Sting solo for many years but I could never fault his voice... He still sounds fantastic.

Looking back on it, even though I'm a drummer, I was drawn to the Police because of Sting's voice and Andy's guitar. So Lonely, Roxanne, De do do do, they all appeal to me for the same reasons.

As for Sting, I've always thought his songwriting began to decline with Synchronicity. I know Every Breath... was the biggest hit ever. But I still don't think it was of the same caliber as the first three albums. So I didn't find much to like about his solo career. Though that Desert Rose song isn't bad, but I think I just like the middle-eastern influence.

I didn't think his voice sounded too good on the lute CD, but even my wife, who is a singer and not a big Sting fan, had to admit that he sounded good at the Grammys.

Yeah, Sting's voice in Roxanne, sounded at grammys like he was doing a Copeland's derangement...

I don't think Sting was singing properly (technically) when he first started out.

He had a really thin strained quality, but at the same time it added a lot of tension to the music which was great. He seemed to have trouble on long tours and lost his voice several times.

Now he has a much fuller tone and sings more in the lower registers, but he can still belt it out when he needs to.

I think he sounded much more energetic at the Grammies (than on most of his solo stuff), just because Stewart brings that extra spark that pushes him a little harder.

There's just something about when the three of them play that creates that magic!
